Hi guys,

Although I use other CAT tools since 2000, I only have 1 week working with CafeTran, so please bear with me.

I'm translating directly in a PDF file with the clipboard. However, now and then when I paste the translation, it doesn't paste anything. It's like the clipboard didn't grab the translation.

Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I've pressed a shortcut I'm not aware of, or something like that.
I even restarted CafeTran, to no avail.

Anybody who can put me on the right track?

Thanks in advance!

Ramon

Hello Ramon,

I take it that CafeTran uses the Windows Clipboard to move selected text from your PDF to CafeTran's source text box?

And this often works, but sometimes it doesn't work.

When you cannot insert the text in CafeTran (with Ctrl+v?), can you insert it in another Windows application?

When you repeat the selection and copy process with the same sentence/word: does it work then?

Cheers,

Hans

Hello Hans,

Thanks for your answer.

Right. CT moves the text from the PDF to the source box. So far, this hasn't failed.
It's when I translate and press ALT+ down arrow that sometimes it doesn't paste the translation back into the PDF.It doesn't paste anything in my text editor either.
Repeating the process doesn't paste it either. I have to cancel the clipboard translation three times, and it get backs to normal.

Other times, it does paste, but it pastes the last translations done. It's like the clipboard doesn't get flushed after each translation, so it keeps appending the translations.

Last question. I'm using  My Memory, but I have to drag and drop, since ALT+H doesn't seem to work with this workflow, Although it does work with easier formats, like MS Word or PowerPoint.
Once again, I may be doing something wrong.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Regards,
Ramon

Hi Ramon,

> It's when I translate and press ALT+ down arrow that sometimes it doesn't paste the translation back into the PDF.

Are you working in some special tool to edit the PDF? As I understand it, you cannot edit PDFs in Acrobat Reader.

Perhaps the insertion has to change from via the clipboard to simulate keystrokes? I'm not sure whether there is a setting for this.

For you too: we can have TeamViewer session: hans.list at gmail.com

Doing it right now on Windows and indeed it works.

It's when I translate and press ALT+ down arrow that sometimes it doesn't paste the translation back into the PDF.

I think it should do so, the help says:
When the last segment is translated, the whole text is transfered back to the Clipboard automatically to be pasted in the document's application.

Last question. I'm using  My Memory, but I have to drag and drop, since ALT+H doesn't seem to work with this workflow,

On my fresh install CafeTran Windows the source segment isn't fed to MyMemory MT at all ...

Cheers,

Hans

Hi Hans,

Yes indeed. I also do DTP, so I do understand the severe limitations of editing in Acrobat, not to mention the Reader.
I'm working in Infix, a sort of mix of Indesign (for the text boxes) and MS Word (for the text flow), where you can, relatively, easily edit text.
I opted for this workflow, because the other way around would imply running an OCR and recreating the files, which is not easy for complex files.

As for Teamviewer, I installed it, but I'm not sure how to connect with you.

I've replicated your steps and for the time being: there's nothing I can add. We'll have to wait for Igor. In the meantime I'll post some RFEs here.

Yes. I have it too. You know that there is a translation workflow in that tool? Convert to XML (if I'm not mistaken), translate and put back. Saves you the manual copying.

The "Professional" version of Infix has a further function of interest to translators: XML text export. This enables the text to be exported to an XML file which can be translated in a CAT tool. The translated text can then be re-imported into Infix Professional.

Yes, I know, and I'll apply that approach with the rest of the files, which are less complex than the one I'm working with now.
Thanks for the link and your time.

The text copied from the PDF doesn't have formatting, correct (I'm asking for confirmation here).

The text to insert in Infix can have bold, italics etc. if you use b../b etc. Right?

Thanks!

HL

PS I guess I have to update Igor's article on the Clipboard workflow.

Although the text in the PDF can have bold, italics, etc., the text in CT is simple text. But, if you paste the translation back to Infix with
CTRL + SHIFT + V (in Windows), it keeps the format of the PDF. So, no need to edit in CT. I refer to the format at paragraph level, not the character level.

Thanks!

HL

I read it. It did help me. I can't wait to try the XML export.

Even inside a paragraph? Like:

Zwölf Boxkämpfer jagen Viktor zum Spaß quer über den Sylter Deich.

I'm afraid not. I meant that it keeps the font, size, or bold, for instance of the whole paragraph.
In Infix, if you press only CTRL+V it gets the format from the text in the clipboard. For CT, since the clipboard has text only, it's the same CTRL+V and CTRL+SHIFT+V

Hello Ramon,

When you choose the Clipboard workflow and press Start, CafeTran starts
listening for the clipboard text.

1. Select and copy (CTRL + C) a chunk of text from another application.
2. CT captures the text and segments it (it also grabs focus).
3. Translate it segment after segment. And only after the last segment
(not after each segment), CT sends back your translation to the clipboard
for pasting in the target application.
4. CT starts listening again for the next copied chunk.

The cycle continues like that until you finish your translation.

As for MyMemory, it looks like they changed a bit the API for the
translation. The error message looks like this:

translator.json.JSONException: JSONObject["subject"] not a string.

I am working on the update to fix it.

Cheers,
Igor

Since I've been testing this too, please allow me to jump in:

I know understand that segmentation rules do have their use here. If you just want to select your own segments, you should disable the segmentation rules before.

I've tried this workflow yesterday on a Windows 8.1 laptop, I reinstalled a fresh CafeTran for this. The activation of CafeTran doesn't take place. Is there a setting that I should check? I had to manually switch to CafeTran. (Hence my question whether this could be improved.)

That is: after the last segment of the selected chunk, I guess?

Wouldn't it be a good idea if CafeTran switches back to the PDF app when the translator presses Alt+down?

Hmm, perhaps I should have tried with Google Translate to see whether the copied source string is sent to the MT.

Hans

You shouldn't because the the chunk may be the whole paragraph or a page.
Let CT segment it too.

Here it does takes place or you should see the flashing CT icon on the
toolbar.

That's correct.

It switches back after the translation of the whole chunk (not after each
next segment = Alt + arrow down) to copy the next chunk.

Are you on Windows 8.1 64-bit already?

No. Here is Windows 7 64-bit at the moment. I will test it on Windows 8
later but I guess the Java shifting focus system has not changed much.
Perhaps you misunderstood some step like expecting the focus change after
each segment?

I'll have another look, you're right, I'm left
with questions ;).

Besides that, right and left are relative qualifications, of course.

Win 8 has its own fancy PDF viewer. When you select text, you get a fancy black icon with 'Copy'.

Hello Igor,

Yes, I am aware of the workflow, that works like a charm BTW.
I guess II was doing something wrong because I don't have the error anymore.

The only pending thing is ALT+H not transferring the output of MyMemory to the target box,
I installed the update, but the message translator.json.JSONException: JSONObject["subject"] not a string still shows.
And ALT+H doesn't work yet.

Working with Win 7, 64, Java 7.60

Thanks a lot for your support!

I have a job here for which CT with clipboard would be perfect (in theory, I think), but I can´t see anything about clipboard in menu. And on the help website, it says "In the Project Manager, press the Translate through Clipboard button."

Well, I don´t see any "Project manager", so I certainly don´t see any Clipboard button.

What is going on? Help`?

Ah thanks.
I tried to drag a document there, but got stuck,

I#ll give up again, no time for this today.

Sort of the typical end to my repeated attempts to use CT...

Hello Igor,

I'm not sure why, but I have noticed that the hits in the glossary don't show.
And the hits in the memory don't show either.

Considering that I never touch the default settings, and that I have worked this way with no problems since 2014, I am kind of clueless about these issues.
I'd appreciate if you point me in the right direction. I must guess that I have changed some settings unintentionally.

Thanks in advance!

Ramon

Hello Igor,

A few days ago, Cafetran just stopped working.
I am using the last version.

The only thing I can think of causing this issue is that I downloaded an update of Java, but it didn´t install correctly.
I got an error message.

But I'm not sure if this caused this issue.

Is there a way to uninstall and install Cafetran again?
Please advise.

Ramon
