Hello everyone,

I have been trying to post this in quite a different list, but all Yahoo lists seem to be %\|$£*$£&^*'d up for some reason. So I thought I'd give it a try here.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. A friend of mine was recently asked to provide a quote for the translation of a fantasy novel from Spanish into English. I said I would ask around as to what sort of prices are generally charged for something like this as my own experience doesn't extend far beyond the world of business and technical texts. I charge anywhere between €0.10 and €0.15/source word for legal/business/IT and technical subjects. However, the book in question is around 255,000 words, and if I would calculate this at my rate I would end up with quite a high amount.

Any suggestion about what I should suggest she do would be very welcome!

Try LinkedIn. If I remember correctly, there was a discussion on this very subject in one of the groups, on a Spanish-English book translation. The guy who did the translation thought he'd been ripped. I'm afraid he wasn't. I think the current rate for ES-EN won't be much more - have a seat first, please - than USD 0.04.
For Dutch book translations, don't expect more than € 0.04, literature (a non-binding advice, but you'll be lucky if you'll get it) € 0.0625.

Cheers,

Hans

Thanks for the info Hans! I'll pass it on to my friend (by which I really do mean friend, and not secretly myself. literature is not really my thing. at least, not when it comes to paying the bills)
