Hi Everyone,
A few weeks ago I taught my kids the name of the weeping willow. In Dutch it's treurwilg, which introduces you to the powerful verb treuren, an active verb for the otherwise passive being sad. Already we're in pretty bad ass linguistic territory with this verb, when you treur, you are not being sad. You are sadding. Now my kids didn't know the word and took to just calling the treurwilg the verdrietige boom. Since then when we go around with the cargo bike, one of them will point out one of the sad trees, and when the bike passes the tree, they will call out, "Oh tree, what's bothering you? Why are you sad?".
Now, I'm telling you all this to point out I could have just said the most entertaining thing ever is happening tomorrow night (Tuesday) in the Mezrab, a night I happen to host myself. It's Pearls on a String, the night in which improv theater meets storytelling and music. But in actuality it's the second most entertaining thing ever. But since I can't carry all of you on my cargo bike, please come. The night is free. Doors open at 19.00, the rest starts at 20.00.
In Persian the weeping willow is the Majnun willow. Taking it's name from the grieving lover going mad from not being able to reach his beloved. A symbolism I didn't get as a kid. I simply called them the lazy trees, because they were lounging about near the water. It's a good thing I now have the maturity to deeply feel the old stories and the poetry. From the very lands of Majnoun and Leila come the musical duo
Albaidar. This
Thursday they will take us on a soulful journey. Listen to tracks
here and get tickets.
If your musical taste is less to lounge about and more to hoppa and perhaps to smash a plate or two, there's the
Greek party on Saturday. These usually sell out fast, so grab the
you know what here.
That's it for this week. If you are the type of person who likes to plan a bit ahead, here's a bit of a sneak of nice things from the future coming your way (and getting closer a day per day):
- We are getting ready for a new season of Queer storytelling nights! The next one is coming on Thursday Oct 1! They're always a lot of fun!
- You don't want to miss the new show I made with my brother from another mother,
Raphael. It's called
My Brother's Keeper, and it's the result of an Israel (him) and an Iranian (me) getting on stage to figure out if we play the story of Abel and Cain, which one of us deserves to live, and which one has to die. The music is pretty awesome too! We play in Theater Bellevue on
October 7 and 8.
Of course, there's so much more happening, but you can catch them going to
www.mezrab.nl and reading all the words and numbers.
See you at the events!
Sahand & Team
PS, we don't actually provide smashing plates on Saturday. I was just using a cultural cliché. Sorry.
