Taking the pulse of a smart city: mobility as we have never seen

Mobility within a wide metropolitan area is a complex system involving multiple modalities of transport (e.g. walking, train, cars, buses, undergrounds, freight, etc.), multiple managing authorities (different city councils, motorways companies, etc.), as well as several million citizens. Mobility in the cities is becoming more and more complex due to the high complexity deriving from the more erratic patterns of the everyday life compared to two decades ago. Our city, unfortunately were not designed for intensive motorised mobility. Congestions are the costly consequence: in the UK congestions cost the economy around 4 billion each year, or £400 per car-commuting household, most of it due to fuel. Lost time is over £300 per commuter a year while hold-ups to business or freight vehicles amounts to over a billion annually.
Recent advances in data analysis and sensing allow to collect huge amounts of data that in turn can help understand, model and optimise mobility, so to reduce congestion and reduce air pollution.
In this talk I will describe some of these methodologies for large scale data collection and analysis, the opportunities they are bringing, as well as risks implied.

About the Speaker:

Fabio Ciravegna is professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Sheffield.

His research concerns large-scale data acquisition and management. He is the director of the European project Seta (setamobility.eu) which focuses on the use of large scale data for efficient, effective, safe, resilient mobility in metropolitan areas (15 partners, €5.5 million).

His research has found industrial applications in fields such as aerospace, manufacturing, sports and smart cities. He is the creator of a technology for tracking human mobility via mobile phones currently adopted by  dozens of thousands of users in the UK.

He has co-created two companies: K-now Ltd which focuses on large-scale analysis of social media analysis, and The Floow which is a global player in the area of car telematics.
