Aftera day's worth of "Unlock the trailer via Twitter " games that was a facade to mask its intended debut on this morning's Good Morning America, we now have the first trailer to Sony's Goosebumps. This is of course the first theatrical feature from R.L. Stine's endless line of kid-friendly horror stories, with the catch being that the actual author appears in the film in the form of Jack Black. This seems to be one of those "the stories are coming to life" plots that will allow the film to hit on the greatest hits from the long-running literary franchise. This was yet another "was supposed to open in August, got moved to October" titles, although at least this time its October 16th release date makes sense in terms of Halloween.

It opens on the same day as Universal/ Comcast Corp.'s Crimson Peak as well, which makes for an interesting "horror film for kids, horror film for adults" combo for families with kids old enough to be dropped off at a theater minus an adult guardian. I went to my first movie alone when I was eleven, although I think I could have done so much earlier if I had bothered to ask. Of course, in today's "parents get arrested for letting their kids play outside in their own front yard" environment, I'm not sure when I'd be comfortable letting my kids go to the movies by themselves.

Anyway, I have Sony some grief last month for allowing their Adam Sandler video game fantasy Pixels (which my daughter really wants to see) to go out as a PG-13 when it seemed to making the sell as a family-friendly PG-rated action fantasy. So I should make a note that Sony is in-fact delivering this one in a kid-friendly PG package, which is smart as it positions the film as something akin to a kid's first theatrical horror film. I still say there is real value in positioning a film like Goosebumps or Pixels as an explicitly kid-friendly option in a sea of PG-13 blockbusters, but I will wait to complain about that until I get a chance to see (the probably going to be huge regardless) Pixels. That won't be until it opens, since I'm out of town the week it opens, but I digress.

Unlike the last few Halloween seasons when true horror films were in somewhat short supply (or at least dominated by one or two big franchises), it's nice to see a wealth of options this time around. We've got Goosebumps, Crimson Peak, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimensions, The Last Witch Hunter, and Scout's Guide to thee Zombie Apocolypse just during October. Obviously the $85 million Goosebumps could be the start of a new kid-friendly franchise if it hits it big, so on the principle that it's not a recycled version of a prior theatrical franchise and/or is designed to appeal to today's kids as opposed to their parents, I'm rooting for it. Anyway, Goosebumps drops October 16th and stars Jack Black, Halston Sage, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Jillian Bell, and Amy Ryan. As always, we'll see. The official synopsis is after the poster.

I am SO excited about this! Sony Pictures just released the trailer for their new film, Goosebumps, starring Jack Black who plays R.L. Stine. The premise for the movie is a group of teenagers, one being Stine's daughter, come across Stine's old manuscripts and accidentally release all the monsters from the books into the real world. I admit it doesn't seem as "scary" as the original shows but it still looks good enough to see.

It's more so nostalgia for me. My inner 90s kid is jumping for joy. I was a huge Goosebumps fan growing up, I actually used to have the books sent to my house and watched it on TV all the time. Hmmm... I think it's time to relive those days on Netflix.

"You've just released every monster I've ever created!" Sony has debuted the first official trailer for Rob Letterman's Goosebumps movie, adapted from the beloved children's horror book series by R.L. Stine. We've been hearing about this one for a while, since it actually showed up at Comic-Con last year, but this is the first trailer showing us some finished footage. This definitely looks like it was made for kids, with the various monsters looking a bit cartoon-y, likely on purpose. Jack Black stars as the author R.L. Stine, with a cast including Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan, Ryan Lee, Jillian Bell. I like the Jumanji aspect with the books, the more monsters on the loose the better. This looks like it might be fun. Might be...

A new trailer for the upcoming Goosebumps on Disney+ has arrived, teasing even more information about the upcoming horror comedy show. The show will center around teenagers working together to uncover their parents' dark secrets in a paranormal mystery. It will premiere on Disney+ on Friday, October 13, 2023.

The trailer sees Justin Long's character Nathan Bratt possessed by a teenager, who begins targeting the children of those who wronged him decades earlier. Many references to classic Goosebumps stories are in the trailer as well, including Say Cheese and Die! and Night of the Living Dummy.

Unlike the original stories written by R.L. Stine, Goosebumps will feature an overarching narrative throughout its 10 episodes. However, references to Stine's original stories are laced throughout promotional material. This means the series will likely see many classic Goosebumps tales remixed for the larger narrative the show is presenting. While a few stories were highlighted in the Goosebumps trailer, there are likely to be many more featured in the full series.

The trailer also exhibits the mix of horror and comedy that will define the series. While stories from Stine's original work can lead to some memorable scares, a focus on comedy makes sense for the show's demographic. It can also help to balance out any creepy moments with some levity, reminding the audience of how absurd some of the concepts of the series can be.

However, the show also has the potential to be a genuinely frightening homage to the original anthology show. While it's clear the series will have plenty of fun and comedic elements to it, that doesn't mean it can't be scary when it wants to be. Just how terrifying Goosebumps is will become clear once the show arrives at Disney+ next month.

The trailer for Sony's Goosebumps portrays a dissatisfied young teen, Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette), snooping around his mysterious neighbor's house after hearing screams. Turns out, the closed-off owner of the house next door is the renowned author R. L. Stine (Jack Black) and the monsters of his imagination are very real, being protected from the outside in locked manuscripts.Advertisement

Reminiscent of imaginative films of old -- including Jumanji and The Pagemaster -- the trailer introduces the story of a couple of curious kids who get in over their heads in magical warfare. Black, playing the fictional version of the famous author, must work with the teens to suck every last monster back into the books where they belong.

2015's Goosebumps had the riveting imagination of R.L. Stine's bestselling children's novels fly off the pages in the blockbuster staring comedic actor Jack Black as a fictional version of the author. However, after announcement of a sequel and rumors of a script without Jack Black's character surfaced, it was unclear if he would return, especially since the first trailer nor any of the films posters didn't feature the actor. Now just a couple weeks before the theatrical release, Jack Black fans can rejoice as a new Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween trailer features the return of his R.L. Stine. Take a look:

The fun, spooky-spirited preview from Sony gets fans in the mood for the fun and family-friendly sequel full of howling werewolves, deadly gnomes, glowing witches and lethal gummy bears. The video features a new set of leads, including Jeremy Ray Taylor from 2017's IT, Madison Iseman from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Caleel Harris from Castle Rock. The kids face a similar premise from its predecessor, as they unlock one of R.L. Stine's books, setting off a collection of monsters and creepy creatures throughout the neighborhood. An "old friend", R.L. Stine, reprised by Jack Black, then appears to the scene, who looks to be now returning for another adventure devoted to putting the creatures of his imagination back in the books he penned.

As October approaches in a few days, it does seem like a bizarre approach for the studio to reveal Jack Black's involvement so close to the release. While it's unclear just how large of a role Jack Black will play in the sequel, considering the circumstances, my guess is that he doesn't appear until the second or third act of Goosebumps 2, possibly as an intended surprise for viewers that the studio might have decided to disclose in hopes of getting more audiences in seats when the sequel is released. The reveal does follow the successful opening weekend of Jack Black's other fantasy family film, The House with a Clock in its Walls, who certainly contributed to the No. 1 spot the movie took.
