Drought and flooding rains
Anyone who designs something on a floodplain or lives near a river has probably heard of the ‘100-year flood’. But what does this mystical number really mean?
The 100-year flood is more correctly referred to as the ‘100 year average recurrence interval (ARI) flood’; that is, the flood whose peak level is equalled or exceeded on average once in every 100 years. Even more correctly, it is the ‘0.01 annual exceedance probability (AEP) event’; that is, the flood whose peak level has a chance of being equalled or exceeded in any one year of 1%.
