Dear California Fractivists,

I have started a new petition, calling on our elected California Democrats to immediately place a moratorium on Fracking in California. Over the past few days, nearly 100 people have already signed. I am hoping that you will take a few moments to sign on and help me spread the word.

(If you aren't from California, I would really appreciate it if you could forward this message to your friends in California)

  The Purpose
I intend to bring these demands, along with the signatures, to the California Democratic Convention this March. For any elected Democratic official currently in the California Assembly or Senate, and for any Democrat running for office in this year's election, I intend to approach each and every candidate and member prior to the elections taking place this fall. I will inform them of the dangers of Fracking; I will inform them of the California Democratic Party's resolution, demanding a moratorium on fracking, which was passed at last year's Democratic convention. I will show them the overwhelming demands of their constituents and the majority of Californians, calling for a moratorium on Fracking. Finally, I will offer them an ultimatum.

  The Ultimatum

(1) Sign onto Assemblyman Marc Levine's letter to Governor Brown that calls on Governor Brown to put a moratorium on Fracking.
(2) Make Climate Change and a Fracking Moratorium a Top Priority for 2014.
(3) They will make their stance on Fracking known, and they will immediately work to place a moratorium on fracking in 2014.

If these three demands are not adequately met, those who sign on will withhold our support for them in the upcoming election. Until these demands are met, the following will pledge will be in order for the signed members of this petition:

No more volunteering, no more canvassing, no more phone calls, no more campaign donations, no more fundraising, no more efforts to "Get Out The Vote", no more campaigning for them, no more interning, no more endorsing, no more event planning, no more organizing, and no more positive press.

In other words, they will start showing respect for their party base, the majority of Californians, the demands of this nation's top climate scientists, and they will start showing real concern for the health and safety of their constituents and the environment; Or, they can expect a very bumpy road as we approach election day.

  The Demand

It's time for our elected officials to start REPRESENTING the people. We demand real democracy; we demand climate justice; and we demand a moratorium on Fracking NOW.

I hope you will join me in this effort to confront our elected officials on the issue of Fracking. We need to make our demands clear, and with your signatures and support, I promise to ensure that every elected official and every democrat running for office in 2014 will hear this message directly.

I hope that all of you will stand with me on this issue : http://www.credomobilize.com/p/StopFrackingCalifornia

Below is the wording of the Petition/Pledge.

Dear Elected California Democrats: We Demand A Moratorium On Fracking

TO: GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN, CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY DEMOCRATS, CALIFORNIA SENATE DEMOCRATS,
AND DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR STATE ASSEMBLY OR SENATE SEATS

(1) We are demanding a moratorium on fracking right now. We are demanding that Governor Brown place an immediate moratorium on fracking or he will not receive our vote for any re-election campaign he may be considering.

We are demanding that our elected Democrats respect the Democratic Party's position on unconventional methods of oil and gas extraction; We are demanding an immediate moratorium on fracking and acidization. We are demanding that our elected Democrats start listening to the majority of their constituents, 58% of whom are demanding a moratorium or a ban on fracking. Finally, we are demanding that our elected Democrats start responding to the irrefutable science of climate change with genuine prudence by ending the fracking nonsense.

(2) We are demanding that our elected leaders come out against fracking and work towards an immediate fracking moratorium in California. We are demanding that they sign on to the letter that Assemblyman Marc Levine has written to Governor Brown, demanding that he place a moratorium on fracking.

Until such actions are taken by each and every individual candidate in the Democratic party, the individual members who are not dedicated to placing a moratorium on fracking will lose our assistance or support until such actions are taken. Such lack of support is mapped out below.

No more donations to any candidate that does not respect the position of the party platform. No more phone banking, no more canvassing, no more fundraising, no more grassroots organizing, no more event planning, and no more assistance to democratic candidates that do not make the implementation of a fracking moratorium a top priority. No more volunteering, no more voter registration, and no more endorsements for candidates that do not favor a moratorium or ban on hydraulic fracturing.

(3) Finally, our elected Democrats, and those who are running for election this fall, will come out against fracking and they will work to immediately place a moratorium on fracking in California or they will not receive our vote in the 2014 elections.

Contested elections against Republicans, regardless of the tightness of the race, will receive the same absence of a vote unless a fracking moratorium is a top priority. Our demands are clear. The implications are real. The choice is theirs.

--------------- THE PLEDGE ---------------

We, the undersigned, pledge to withhold our support and our votes for any member of the Democratic Party who does not support the Democratic Party platform's position on fracking. We pledge to withhold support and votes from any Democratic candidate that fails to make a fracking moratorium a top priority in 2014. We are demanding a fracking moratorium in California right now.

_______________________________________________________________

Thank you for all the hard work that all of you continue to put into this anti-fracking effort. Our movement is growing stronger every day and we will ban fracking in California; it's only a matter of time. Keep up the great work everyone.

Damien,
Count me in.
But also I would advise linking the stopping of all past, present and
future fracking as related to the Calif "water crisis" too. Fracking damages
our water supply -- permanently. We are in a serious drought and need to
stop everything that threatens our water in the state.
Fracking is the #1 threat.
Thanks for doing this.
Woody

Thanks Woody,

I will certainly add those concerns to the petition. I absolutely agree that fracking is the #1 threat to water. Thank you for bringing this up. I will also send out updates on these major concerns as the list grows. Thanks for signing on.

You are SO right! Fracking threatens our right to clean and safe water from multiple directions! We need to push back and hard.

We also need to keep fighting Fast Track for the TPP trade agreement, because every environmental group - from Food and Water Watch to Sierra Club and more - agrees that our environmental protections will evaporate if this deal goes through.

See attached:
1. Fact sheet on TPP and gas fracking
2. Analysis of leaked TPP environmental text

Join next Sunday's TPP call - it will be all fracking and the environment.  Ilana Solomon from Sierra Club and David Levine, a law professor in North Carolina and strong anti-fracking activist, will be on hand to talk about how the laws we have now are  failing our environment, how "free trade" threatens it even more, and what we can do about it!

Our government is barely responsible now - if it comes down to weakening environmental protections or having to pay damages to a foreign corporation, we know what will happen!

There is no solution regarding water, without a sufficient decrease in GHG emissions. I hope Mr. Gleick makes that clear. Otherwise, he may be doing more harm than good.  We now understand that S-3-05 is too little too late. We need the S-3-05 2050 target achieved by 2030.

Too far for me. I would have to drive.

I am sure the others on this list will make the point, if Peter is clueless about our need to reduce emissions enough. All of his water-availability assumptions have to be based on some assumed GHG emission reduction trajectory. Will we achieve it? What if we don’t? How will we achieve it?

I work the Light Duty Vehicle problem. We will need rapid societal change. It must include more than just the easy stuff. I am not optimistic. Even the CDP E. Caucus wants to pretend it knows we can get by with just the easy stuff.
