If your computer does not support a regular Windows 11 installation, it will likely boot with the Windows 11 PE version, as Windows PE versions have significantly lower hardware requirements. For instance, if your computer boots with the Windows 10 PE version, it is highly probable that it will also boot with the Windows 11 PE version.
Upon booting, the PE version attempts to install drivers for essential components such as graphics, sound, wireless and Ethernet cards for your hardware, facilitating connection to a WIFI or Ethernet network. I want to reset my windows 8 password through Hirens boot cd mini windows xp. It does not detect my hard drive so i can not find the SAM file.
How can i make it see my hard drive so i can fix this?
Unlike what a lot of other forums say, you actually have to go into your PC's bios settings and BOOT TO AHCI (RUN SATA AS AHCI MODE) to make Hirens see your computers C drive. (Confirmed works on Dell NVME m.2 drives)
From here, choose which account you want to change the password > Change the password > Then you need to do two things - Restart the PC but also change the bios back to whichever SATA option it was before and then restart back into Windows.
If nothing works out, you can just use the Ubuntu Live CD to backup your data to another partition and perform a clean install of Windows 8.1. Use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to download an ISO. Since you are locked out of your main computer which has the Windows 8 key, you can download it on another computer by using a Volume License key pertaining to the appropriate edition (Pro, Home, Single Language, etc). These are freely available on the internet.
Trying to create a Hiren's BootCD on a USB. Not needing anything else such as a dual boot of Ubuntu and Haren or Window's and Haren. All the programs that I can find to complete this either end up directing me on how to create a Ubuntu boot on a usb, or how to do it on Windows. But since it is my Windows computer that I'm trying to fix I need an alternative. Please Help?
After the USB is created, mount it in Nautilus (just click the USB drive icon), go into the HBCD folder, rename the isolinux.cfg file to syslinux.cfg and copy it to the root of the USB, overwriting the existing file. Change the first line of syslinux.cfg from DEFAULT /HBCD/Boot/menu.c32 to DEFAULT menu.c32.
None of the below methods will work.Although you will get a bootable USB, it doesn't chainload anything out of the Grub Menu. This is especially true for the 'revised' edition of Hiren's Boot CD (the one with the mini-version of Windows XP)
Insert your USB drive into your PC and start Ubuntu's partition Manager. Format the drive to FAT32, primairy partition and give a nice label.While you are at it, note the device's mount location (for example /dev/sdb)
Now place the Hirens Boot CD iso-file in a new folder.Right-click the file and choose 'extract here'When it is done, delete the iso file and copy all the rest of the content to the root your USB drive.
There should be 1 folder called HBCD on the drive now, and 4 small other files.Now open the folder called HBCD and copy the files 'grldr' and 'menu.lst' to the root of the drive. Be sure to copy them, do not cut.
get hiren's Iso into your HDD. insert your USB pendrive or whatever, download rufus and proceed with burning the hiren.ISO file into the USB.once you succeeded, you need to restart your pc and check that your BIOS is configured in such a way that your boot order has your harddrive as the last thing to boot from.Also make sure, that as you reboot your pc again, and you have your USB burned and plugged, you dont have anything else that your pc might boot from.Hope it helps (btw, i just did this 30 minutes ago...) Saving a normal Linux user from even needing any external medium.(Though loopbacks can boot isos from other partitions/media too, if you are willing to not use grml-rescueboot and do the GRUB2 config manually.)
I built and booted off Hirens Boot CD v15.2 in order to scan a machine I suspected of containing malware. I booted the 'Mini XP' image and then fired up networking and ran Malwarebytes. Admittedly it said it might not work properly under 'Mini XP' however it seemed to update it's definitions and run a scan just fine. It produced the following results:-
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware needs to be installed in order to run and as said by Rich it needs to run from the real OS not a boot CD. Running it from a CD like that is both against the EULA as well as potentially dangerous due to possible high rate of false positives.
Someone told me he had Hirens boot CD on his flash drive and it was specially set up to use on a live windows system. Is there anything special one would do if the plan was to use it on a live windows system?
You can still run the hirens setup system on a live windows. Some of the programs does not work on the newer windows systems. Hirens boot cd has the files compressed with 7zip and they are temporarily decompressed to the harddrive when running.
Try burning the iso to a disc and try on the live windows. When you see proof of concept, then follow the tutorial for a flash drive.
I agree that wired ethernet should be much better than using your wireless if possible. If you decide to go the Linux route, just download Ubuntu ISO -14.04-desktop-i386.iso and use the Live function to boot into it without installing. From there you can see your hard drive and copy it to whatever medium you prefer.
try booting xp mode and use one of the tools in the giant menu of stuff, or see if there is a newer version of hirens. I don't want to tell you to mess with the BIOS settings or start pulling parts out of it.
Your reply does not answer the question I posed, because by "where are all these utilities?" I meant "where inside the HBCD15.2 which I downloaded from the hiren official site", not "where on the internet".
I already knew what you linked. Maybe you are right in saying that "perhaps they only put the most used ones on disc but make the others available for download". I did guess so. But they have claimed that "All in one Bootable CD which has all these utilities". Maybe it is not true! Anyway....
I don't think Hirens is really meant for that sort of use i.e. running the tools as standalone, sure you can do it for some but the idea is you download it and burn/copy it to a bootable CD or USB. You then boot your computer using Hirens instead of the OS on your hard drive, where you are given a menu (essentially a boot menu for multiple OS's) where you can make selections on what to run.
It's like a live CD with a choice of environments to start up into and depending on what you choose you can then run some of the utilities (but only the ones pertaining to the environment you selected). The difference here between a normal live CD and this is that Hirens is designed to be able to access the HDD with your regular OS on it for maintenance/troubleshooting etc, it's not really designed as a checkout this OS type thing like a live CD is.
Oh ok I just looked at mine within explorer and what you're after is within the Maxtor folder within Dos\HDDtools.7z - how you get to it from the boot menu I'm not really sure but if memory serves me correctly not everything is listed in the menus - I'd be inclined to just use the option to boot to dos without actually selecting a utility from the menu (I'm pretty sure there would be an option in the menu for that) and then navigate to the folder above and run from there (the 7z is likely to show up as a folder probably be in a ram disk but I'm not really sure), but I suggest reading whatever txt files are in the Maxtor directory too, the program you're looking at is command line only and you'll need to know what options you want to use. Sorry I can't be much help it's been a long while since I used it and when I do I tend to use the linux or winxp aspects of it.
I understand that has changed now and I was thinking of taking a look at it. Went to the site, but it seems to be a morass of ads for everything else, and nowhere can I find a simple download link. So I tried a couple of 3rd party download sites from Google search and that was even worse.
Luckily I used the XP Recovery Disc which came with the machine to repair the problems on my boot drive, so I may try to burn the CD from that machine and see if it works.
It looks like a useful collection of tools to use if anything similar happens.
i had a bad smart virus today (i was about to cry) all my hard work in pd, i did not have a backup hard drive or a windows recovery disk because it was so damaged so i was tying to find and delete the virus on my on my linux , i could not find the two that was killing me, and so the virus changed my boot files so i could not login to linux ( more tears ) so i ran a scan from my brothers pc and noting still. I was a bit scared to try this hiren's boot cd (i was thanking the boot was fake software ) but it works for all most any problem you can run in to and it dose lots of task ect!
