Tomaintain very stable tape motion with optimum tape tension, it uses a full tension servo control system in which a photo-interrupter senses the position of the tension arm so that the servo mechanism can adjust the torque of the reel motor.
Had a X2000R in my workshop today. Amazing machine. Sounds great even with 9,5 cm/sec. Don't try to make any mechanical adjustments if the reels are not running fast enough or the sound is muffled. Very complicated logic for reel spinning and can be a nightmare repair if you not knowing what you do. :-)
This machine has the most stable transport I have ever seen. Even while rewinding high speeds the tape path remains perfectly stable. Same can be said for the recording quality and playback. It's no less than incredible. The sound is so clean and I have literally never heard a shred of distortion for the 4 years I have owned this deck. It's really hard to screw anything up on this deck when it comes to using it. The stable tape path makes it very hard for a user to mess something up. Very easy to use.
Highly responsive VU meters, seem to be the ones that respond to every variation in the sound unlike older VU meters, meaning the peak level on these meters are accurate. And with a response of 30Hz to 40kHz and wow and flutter at 0.03% You really can't go wrong with this deck.
Owned a X2000R for about 15 years, and it is one of the absolutely most beautiful and sexy reel tape recorders, when it works.
I absolutely love mine, and it sounds nothing less than stellar, especially with good quality tape stock. I almost never use the DBX noise reduction when recording, as I play my tapes on various other decks that doesn't support it. It does work quite nice but sometimes have problems tracking on certain types of programme material.
There are quite a few cons of this machine, but all relates to when it is *not* fully adjusted. The tape transport is very advanced, featuring optical sensors for the tension arms, ensuring constant tension regardless of reel sizes, so no need to flip a switch, and it even allows you to mix different reel sizes. It must be pretty well adjusted.
The dual capstan also cause troubles. The belt need replacement every 5-10 years for the machine to perform it's best. Otherwise it is almost guaranteed to cause tape skew (that causes uneven wear on the heads) or tape slip (that causes the tape to loose contact to the heads).
It is really nice with a tape deck with true full auto reverse, so it both plays and records both directions. That's why it has 6 heads. It just seems pointless in my opinion that the tape has contact with all 6 heads, regardless which way it is currently playing. This increases wear on tapes and also on the heads that are not being used.
Despite the flaws, and the plastic feel, I absolutely love this deck. Mine needs some work now, but hopefully it will be up and running like new soon.
Hi, does anyone know where the so-called correction jig is stated in the service manual (fig. 2-15) for the alignment of the pinch roller shaft and capstan shaft ?? Any help is highly appreciate. Thanks in advance
Came into one of these from family estate and attempting to get it running. Rigged up an old mixed tape that came with it, but can't seem to get it to play.
The REC light is constantly flashing, the rest of the control lights seem to work, but when I attempt to play in either direction the reel just clicks and advances slightly. It will fwd and rev, although at various speeds. This due to changing tension? in tape. Any insight welcome, before I take it to a shop for a look see.
I have just been given one of these magnificent machines, and although it seems to run reasonably enough, the tape does not adhere properly to the heads during play/record. It seems to me that the left hand capstan wheel is running fractionally faster than the right one, so the tape "bags" away from the heads, being pushed faster in than it is being recovered. (I'm running it in horizontal position). If I pull the left hand capstan wheel slightly away from its drive, (i.e. with only the right hand capstan now active) the tape runs perfectly. It might even be due to the fact that the machine hasn't been in recent use (probably stood doing nothing for a few years, I'd guess). Is this adjustable in any way that your "average user" can do, or have you any recommendations?
I believe you have an issue of the tension arms out of adjustment. If you are Tech incline guy, you can open the plastic cabinet and try minute adjustments in R122 (forward play) and R222 (reverse play). Be very careful, so as not to wander away from within the parameters of operation. Note: You can mark original positions for a reference
point so you can go back. To do this, the unit should be plugged in with tape on one reel and a take-up reel and play mode. Tinker little bit at a time till tapes becomes taut in play, repeat for the opposite side. Think "safety" use plastic tools if possible. I have used jewelers tool for this however.
You guys are a life saver, I brought my reel in Japan in the early 80's being in the military it has spent a lot of time in storage. Now it's time to break out the old reels and let the good roll again. Thanks for everything
Thank you for the service maual.I am new member (few hours). This manual is THE TOOL for me
to restore this superb piece of equipment that I own from brand new since 1987 and it is unused
(no more than 100 houres of working).
Pardon my lack of understanding on how this works...
I just inherited a reel to reel tape deck from my father. When I press the play button it doesn't play. It clicks and the tape moves very little, but the pinch rollers don't engage and the tape doesn't start turning. Does anyone have an idea what I should check first?
Hi, If the pinch rollers are not engaging it is probably due to hardened grease on the solenoid mechanism.
You will need to free the mechanism using alcohol to remove the grease. Also try moving the pause lever up and down to free the roller mechanism.
Hope this helps.
TEAC introduces its new spectacular Distinction Series consisting of a newly designed range of separate HiFi components in classic full size. What about this....
There they were. Taking up valuable space. Two TEAC X-2000-, a friend ofmy Father's had kept them in their boxes, in his store room, for thelast 10+ years. This friend had originally used them for one job: Audiotesting in conjunction with the "Light Show" he had created (he's infibre optics)for the opening of a new building. The company contractedin for the audio work hadn't arrived, and he wanted to get his bitright.
They were offered to me. He didn't want them. I said "yes!"
I'd always liked the idea of having a reel-to-reel machine in my livingroom, and new some people that would too. In fact I'd partly agreed aprice for one with a friend before I'd even got them. But when they didarrive, one look at them told me we were dealing with something thatdeserved more than a life as an "ornament" in the living room. Besides,I'd just had an offer accepted on a 1st floor Georgian flat, in Camdentown. The Living room is small. These things were large. QED.
A quick search on Google brought me to Stefano's site,
www.audioscope.net. It was well laid out and professionally done (I'm inthe e-commerce business myself) so I knew I would be getting an informedresponse when I sent a speculative email with some photos. A responsewas immediate. Further phots sent, and a price agreed. Stefano wanted tocome over to the UK from Germany to pick them up personally.
The agreed Friday arrived, and there was the door bell. 20 mins early(we'd both forgotten the time difference thanks to British Summer Time,or was it British Winter Time, who knows?
Snuggly packed in the car Stafano said he had promised a friend he wouldsend a postcard from Stone Henge.
Stone Henge? I live in Hertfordshire. That ring of stones was A LONG WAYAWAY. I had to prove it to him on a map.
I think he got my point....

Recently I obtained, for a fair price, a Teac X-2000R. It is a stereo reverse deck, with 6 heads, which means it will record also in reverse. It has dbx built-in, and it can use (chromium) EE tape. A digital counter in hours, minutes and seconds and bias fine tuning on the front panel is also provided. It has 9,5 and 19 cm/s speeds.
Another prominent feature that is has, however proved to be a very problematic one. The deck is equipped with 2 capstans. This feature was introduced into the later tape deck models, almost towoards the end of the tapedeck-era, to further improve tape-head contact and wow&flutter. These assumptions are correct, and they work well when the deck is in new condition and everything is well calibrated and up to specifications.
