Donald Trump’s automotive tariffs and his cuts to EV subsidies have created massive disruption within the sector. But the truth is, Canada’s EV strategy never made much sense. 

The idea of building EVs here using Canadian minerals, creating high quality jobs and reducing emissions was appealing. Unfortunately, it was a fantasy.

Thank you, John, for sending us the G&M Editorial Board’s conclusion that Canada’s EV strategy has stalled.  They hint at dropping the import tariffs on Chinese EVs. Such a move would, of course, help reduce our carbon emissions. As well, and importantly, I can only imagine such a move being considered if Canada were to gain equivalent trade concessions on the part of the Chinese.
