Ifyou shoot 360 photos with a 360 camera (Ricoh Theta or similar) or use the 'panorama' feature in a smartphone camera app, Facebook and Google know the results should be used as an interactive panorama. This is thanks to embedded metadata these sites look for when an image is uploaded.
Exif Fixer helps fix this; it reads the full metadata from a selected JPEG image, and if the required elements are missing it can add them for you with a single click. Download a free copy of Exif Fixer below.
The process of using Exif Fixer on your own computer is simple. First drag-drop an image into the main window (or use the Choose button and browse to your image). Then pick your options or leave it at the default settings. The calculated metadata is shown in the scrolling field on the right. Finally, click Add Metadata and your panorama will be given the new correct metadata.
If you'd like to customise the data that will be embedded you can do this in the scrolling metadata field. Make sure any edits are 'exif-legal' and follow the general form of what's listed here or it will be ignored when adding to your image. If you delete a line from this list it won't be added to your image.
When batch-processing multiple panoramas the first image in the list is what's shown and what's used for calculating the new metadata. The same data will be added to every file, so make sure they are all of appropriately similar types. (For example don't mix cylindrical and equirectangular panoramas in a batch list.)
I create software tools to help solve creation or production problems and improve workflow efficiencies in 360 VR work and beyond. I also create high-end professional 360 photographic content and tours.
Not found a quick (free) way on iOS but i use the excellent and free Exif Fixer on the Mac (also on Windows) and inject exif to make it seem that a Ricoh Theta took the image, then FarceFook etc recognise it as a panorama.
Now, this has been fixed since camera raw version 11.4, I belive and is called "Edge aware editing in 360-degree panoramas".
To my surprise, I ended up with a seam in the latest version of PS and camera raw recently.
The problem is, camera raw seems to only apply this edge aware editing mode when it recognizes the image as a "real" 360-degree panorama - shot with a real 360-camera.
Since all of my 360 images are renderings, made with 3D software, I end up having this old problem again.
you're right when assuming CR is checking the metadata for certain tags to be sure it's a 360 panorama and whether it's a spherical, a cylindrical, or even a partial one. 360 cameras and stitching apps aren't always reliable when it comes to inserting the correct tags into the exif data.
the best way is to check and/or edit this with exif fixer:
another advice: if this work is tedious with a large number of panos, consider writing a script for the exif tools. they are command line tools for metadata manipulation:
there are also GUIs for this tool (win: , I'm using on my mac). they're batchable which should address your problem.

Issue is fairly straightforward, images taken on the THETA SC and imported + edited in a RICOH THETA app that are then exported back to the the THETA app will not post. Airdropping the image or emailing it to myself results in a blank picture. Running it through an EXIF fixer just makes the blank image black. I have an iPhone 8, for what it is worth. I am editing the images in the MIKU THETA app, and exporting them to the Ricoh THETA app.
I tried immerGallery but found it to be incredibly clunky and not at all user friendly. After some time wrestling with the terrible UI and failing to even see any of my own images I uninstalled it and requested a refund.
360 images and video or 3603D images and video will display in Quest when they have the proper metadata tags in the exif of the files. You can view these files directly in the Quest using the photo viewer, file browser, or Oculus TV (browse to local files). To view these, you might have to change the display setting in the app to 360 or 3603D or 180/1803D. Look for those settings when you open the image or video.
Sometimes the file size causes the viewers to freeze. Sometimes uploading the file to YouTube works better but then is reduced in quality. Maybe try to publish the file to a facebook account (if you have that linked) or a Meta Content Creator page. It would be nice if the Quest could better natively handle large 360 and 3603D and 180/1803D files.
@HeyKarnage Can you tell me a little more about the panoramic photo you're trying? Are you just using the pano function on iPhone where you take a panoramic photo by rotating the phone along the horizon? I can give that a try when I have some time. It might be that the proper type of metadata might need injected into the photo.
The mapivi app, comes with the official Debian repository. It is GUI and can edit EXIF and IPTC. Additionally it shows the tags' data format, which is difficult to know from exif and exiv2.I use mapivi as a tool for some pictures and if I need scripts, I get from it the format to prepare the script.
