Hello CACNE Members!

Fall is certainly going along at full pace here in New England.  And, just like the days of ice-free sidewalks and leaves in trees, Cal Football 2009 is coming to a rapid conclusion.  There are just three more Cal Football viewing parties this season, and they all guarantee competitive matchups and good times had by all.  Hope to see you there!

Also, for all of you who are homesick for Berkeley, ESPN has a great breakdown of why the campus is so incredible on game days: http://sports.espn.go.com/travel/news/story?id=4647075.

Arizona looks like a battle on Mars.  - Author Unknown

Transportation: MBTA to Fenway (Green D line) or Kenmore (Green B, C, and D lines)

Here's a quick version of "The More You Know" prior to this week's showdown with Arizona.
  • Arizona is 6-2 and 4-1 in the Pac-10, after being defeated in conference play by Washington after the Huskies scored two touchdowns in the last three minutes of the game to finish a dramatic comeback at home.
  • The University of Arizona is the only remaining Pac-10 conference school to not award plus and minus grades for courses.  This has cut back on the school's administrative advising costs, since resources are not needed to explain the complex transcripts to students.
  • UA has not had much football success recently.  Its 2008 Las Vegas Bowl appearance was the program's first bowl in ten years, and the school has not won a Pac-10 Conference Championship since 1993.  However, in their past ten match-ups, Arizona is 6-4 against the Golden Bears.
  • The University of Arizona school motto is "Bear Down", which features prominently also in their fight song.  That a Bear would be first and foremost in UA lore goes to show the influence of the University of California on other schools across the country.
  • For over 100 years, university administrators apparently forgot that Arizona is in a desert and required all of their buildings to be made of at least 3/4 bricks.
  • The film Revenge of the Nerds (1984) was filmed at the University of Arizona.  For those of you familiar with the movie, the school dorms are still so overloaded that students are sometimes assigned to live in common areas and gyms until accommodations can be arranged.
  • The University of Arizona's original school colors were sage green and silver.  They now use the very hypocritical blue and cardinal red.
  • Saturday's game will be broadcast nationally on Versus.  However, not all cable and satellite providers carry Versus, which means that the best place to watch the game, as usual, will be at the Baseball Tavern with your friends at CACNE!
This game should be big for the Golden Bears and a good competitive match-up.  Hope to see you at the Baseball Tavern!

In conclusion, I am changing pace and leaving you with the words of one of Arizona's most famous alumni, author David Foster Wallace: "The most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about."

If you've read this far, you're incredibly patient, and thank you for your continued commitment to CACNE.

Go Bears!
