Dear New England Golden Bears,

Happy New Year to you all!  Like every year since 1868, 2008 is going to be a great time to be a Golden Bear.  After closing our football season with a come-from-behind bowl victory against Air Force, Cal once again garnered the academic honor of top public university and the athletic honor of best all-around sports program in the nation through the fall.

Closer to home, your CACNE Board is hard at work planning a series of exciting events (including non-sporting ones as well!) for this year both for our own membership as well as in conjunction with other area alumni clubs.  Keep your eyes peeled for more ...

1. Cal vs Stanfurd Basketball

One always has to get pumped whenever we play Stanfurd in anything.  Come see Cal avenge our Big Game gridiron loss on our home hardwood!

When: Saturday, January 26, 7pm
Where: McFadden's (148 State St; Boston, MA 02109) (near Faneuil Hall)

2. Celtics Game with Leon "The Show" Powe

The Boston Celtics are back this year, with Kevin Garnett and former Cal star Leon "The Show" Powe helping to lead the charge! CACNE will be taking a trip to cheer for The Show and see the boys in green (which is really just blue and gold together, isn't it?) take on the LA Clippers.

Last year CACNE caught the Celtics vs the Miami Heat and went nuts as Powe played 32 minutes, shut down Shaq, and notched his first career double-double.  We even got to meet Leon after the game!

When: Wednesday, February 6, 7:30pm
Where: TD Banknorth Garden
Cost: $35 ($30 for paid members)

We've got 40 tickets for our group, and there is only 1 left unclaimed!  Reserve it now at www.calnewengland.org/celtics.html

3. Intramural Adult Sports Leagues

CACNE may be fielding a few teams for some Boston intramural adult sports leagues this spring in volleyball, dodgeball, kickball, and/or softball.  Dates and locations to be determined, but if you are potentially interested at all in participating in any of these sports, please reply and let us know which sport(s) interest you.

4. CACNE Forum

Following the example of some of the other alumni clubs, we've set up a secondary email list called CACNE Forum.  Unlike this list, which is to be used only by the Board for official announcement and club business, CACNE Forum is a listserve to be used for non-business interaction for and by any of our club members.

Some examples of how other such lists are used are:
  • Selling furniture/electronics/apartments
  • Cal-related Sports Illustrated and ESPN articles and photos, and other generally interesting sports news
  • Party announcements
  • "Someone left a [color] [articles of clothing] at my place/game/bar"
  • Random jokes and hilarious articles, videos, photos
  • Looking for rides and carpools
  • Anything else you can think of that the club might want to hear about
Cal's Rally Comm described their similar list as "a party in your in-box!"  If you'd like to join this party, please visit: http://groups.google.com/group/cacne-forum/subscribe

5. CACNE Online

Do you love CACNE so much that the time that passes between these emails seems interminably slow and nearly devoid of meaning?  Never fear my friend, you can always check out and join our various online homes:

6. Oski's Trivia Corner

This week's challenge (and those smarties who reply to Misha with the correct answer by next Sunday will be put into a drawing for another fabulous www.calstudentstore.com gift certificate- good for any Cal gear you'll ever need- at the end of the month):

Presidential primary season is upon us, and all our trivia brains have had some time to rest, so here's a doozy for you: If you take the names of the last two Cal alums to run for President of the United States, tell us the short phrase you can anagram them to, which will have the the same meaning as "mooches a bowling necklace".

Take care and GO BEARS!
