Hi all,

South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) has launched the fourth annual Young Leaders Institute (YLI)! YLI is a leadership development training for undergraduate students and other young adults to build leadership skills, connect with activists and mentors, and explore social change strategies around issues that affect South Asian and immigrant communities in the US. This year’s theme is “Addressing and Confronting Anti-Black Racism.” This theme will focus on addressing and confronting anti-Black racism within South Asian American communities, and also search for strategies to support Black Lives Matter both on students’ campuses and in their communities. The training is July 24–26, with all travel, lodging, and food paid by SAALT. More information is below—please forward to young adults you believe would be a good fit for the program!

Best,

Victoria

2015-2016 Young Leaders Institute

Addressing and Confronting Anti-Black Racism

SAALT's Young Leaders Institute (YLI) is an opportunity for undergraduate students and young adults to build leadership skills, connect with activists and mentors, and explore social change strategies around issues that affect South Asian and immigrant communities in the US. The Institute is designed to cultivate skills to deepen knowledge and awareness; strengthen and nurture relationships with diverse communities; and empower young leaders to be agents of change.

This year, the Institute's focus will be on addressing and confronting anti-Black racism through civic engagement. As we have seen in recent days, weeks, and months, Black Americans, particularly Black men, are disproportionately the targets and victims of violence, structural inequities, and policies that reinforce many forms of structural racism in American society. SAALT believes all individuals in the US, including South Asian Americans and particularly South Asian American youth, have much at stake in addressing  the impact of structural racism. Engaging South Asian Americans to address racism, specifically anti-Black racism and its effects in our communities, is critical and a precursor to South Asian Americans being in unity with Black communities and broader liberation struggles of communities of color in the US.

Young Leaders Institute participants will attend an intensive training in the DC-metro area on July 24-26, 2015. Participants will also develop and implement projects to address anti-Black racism through civic engagement among South Asian Americans on their campuses and in their communities.

SAALT is seeking 15-20 outstanding, diverse young leaders to join the 2015-2016 Young Leaders Institute. Please review the FAQ for more information about the Young Leaders Institute, this year's theme, who can apply, and how to apply.

"Being at YLI was inspiring because there were so many things, seeing so many South Asians that are dedicated to the same issues that I am passionate about. It was just very inspiring and refreshing to see such a safe space and I would like to expand this and go into more South Asian communities and take the things that I've learned here to further build. "

- Sonum Dixit, YLI 2013 Fellow
