Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to announce that the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) is accepting applications for a free interpretation certification program.  Specifically we are looking for bilingual New Yorkers who would like to help their community by providing volunteer interpretation services. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute in emergency situations by helping to communicate important life-saving information to New Yorkers who do not speak English.

MOIA is accepting applications for NYCertified volunteers, a free interpretation certification program, for any New York City resident who:

  • is proficient in English and another language other than English
  • is at least 18 years old
  • has good working knowledge of the population and the community for whom they will interpret
  • has prior experience in interpretation and
  • is available on short notice or for emergency situations

What is required of NYCertified interpretation volunteers?

  • Complete a 7-hour on-line interpretation training course (based on the candidate’s schedule and needs)
  • Attend a one day training and a graduation ceremony
  • Be available to provide at least 20 hours of volunteer interpretation services in their community

The deadline for applications is March 31st, 2015.  Please click here for the application or visit our website at www.nyc.gov/immigrants.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Best,

Nisha Agarwal, Commissioner

New York City Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs
