Summer 2015 Internships & Opportunities Guide

Happy new year to everyone in the ITASA community! Even though it feels like the Fall semester has just ended, Spring is right around the corner and many of you might be looking into Summer internships or other opportunities. The Programs team has compiled a list of programs aimed towards the Taiwanese American and Asian American communities.

This newsletter is organized into the following sections: Political & Public Service, Community Service & Non-Profit, Creative Arts & Mediaas well as Opportunities in Taiwan. This guide will also be made available on the ITASA website. If you have any questions, please contact National Programs Director, Austin Ko.
 

Political & Public Service

 

Taiwanese American Citizens League (TACL)

Political Internship Program - Washington, DC | June 6 - August 1, 2015 
The TACL Political Internship Program, now entering its 23rd year, places college students in congressional offices while also providing workshops on leadership, identity, policy and networking. Students are paired with a mentor and work on an advocacy project throughout the summer.
Applications are due February 20, 2015 | Stipend is available upon successful completion

 Formosa Foundation

Ambassador Program - Washington, DC | 2015 Dates TBA
The Ambassador Program combines in-house training with on-the-ground activist work. Participants in the Program develop the expertise, analytical framework, and network they need to effectively promote Taiwan. Up-and-coming activists can learn about the issues affecting Taiwan first-hand.
Applications are TBA for 2015 Training, Workshops, and Lodging are provided

 

 Taiwan-America Student Conference (TASC)

2015 Conference - Taipei, Taichung, and Tainan | July 21 - August 12, 2015
TASC is a student-run conference that equips students from the U.S. and Taiwan with the resources & opportunities they need to become the global leaders of tomorrow. Their mission is to build and strengthen student-to-student ties between the United States and Taiwan in order to create a new U.S-Taiwan social narrative for our generation.
Applications are due on February 28, 2015 | Program Cost is $1,500 (Scholarships Available)


 OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates

Summer Internship Program - Washington, DC | 2015 Dates TBA
OCA seeks to cultivate future leadership among Asian Pacific Americans. OCA Places students at the OCA National Center, Non-Profits, Governmental Agencies, Congressional Offices, and various corporations.
Applications are due Summer 2015 TBA | Stipend is $2,500
 

 Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS)

Summer Internship Program - Washington, DC | June 1 - July 24, 2015
APAICS selects undergraduate students for the opportunity to experience American politics and public policy. APAICS interns are placed in US congressional offices and federal agencies.
Applications are due January 30, 2015 | Stipend is $2,000 and a round-trip flight
 

 International Leadership Foundation (ILF)

Civic Fellowship - Washington, DC | 2015 Dates TBA
ILF places 30 APA students in federal agencies, non-profits, NGOs, and congressional offices. Students undergo a rigorous program to learn more about the American and international political process and what it takes to become a leader in the academic, entrepreneurial, cultural, professional, and private and public sectors. Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply.
Applications are due February 1, 2015 | Stipend is $2,000 
 

 Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL)

Federal Internship Program - Washington, DC | 2015 Dates TBA
CAPAL places undergraduate and graduate students in internships across the federal government. Depending on interests and placement, intern duties could vary and may include policy or scientific research, project coordination and management, finance, statistics, business, law, communications, and more.
Applications are due 2015 TBA | Stipend is $3,000 and $500 for relocation expenses
 

 White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI)

Internship - Washington, DC | Dates Flexible
WHIAAPI offers full-time internships during the spring, summer, and fall. Interns will help write policy memos and proposals, draft blogs, assist with communications and social media, coordinate and staff events, and conduct outreach to national and local AAPI organizations and leaders.
Applications are due March 27, 2015 
 

 Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE)

Leadership Academy - Washington, DC and Los Angeles, CA | June 16 - August 14, 2015
CAUSE has prepared elite student leaders to be at the forefront of the legislative arena. In both the DC and LA programs, students are placed in the offices of legislators, participate in a weekly speaker forum, and work on a group policy paper.
Applications are due April 10, 2015 | Stipend is $1,000 upon successful completion (DC interns receive an additional $1,500 housing stipend)
 

 Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs (APAPA)

California Capitol Summer Internship Program - Sacramento or Stockton, CA | June 15 - August 14, 2015
The APAPA Capitol Summer Internship Program is designed to prepare college students to become future leaders in the State of California. Interns who are applying for Sacramento may be placed at the State Capitol, district offices in Sacramento and vicinity, or Office of Planning & Research. Interns who are applying for Stockton will be placed in district offices in Stockton.
Applications are due February 11, 2015 | Stipend is $1,000 upon successful completion 


Community Service & Non-Profit
 

 National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (CAPACD)

Internship - Washington, DC
National CAPACD is seeking undergraduate or graduate students to work with a dynamic, progressive nonprofit organization committed to advancing the well-being of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities through advocacy, organizing and leadership development. Interns will have the opportunity to meet community and national leaders, engage in substantive research and writing, organize and/or attend local and national events, participate in AAPI social justice networks and learn about AAPIs in nonprofits and community development.

 Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics, Inc. (LEAP)

Leadership in Action - Los Angeles, CA | June 15 - August 7, 2015
Leadership in Action (LIA) is an eight-week summer internship program designed to develop emerging young leaders by providing college students with practical leadership skills and the opportunity to work hands-on in the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community in Southern California. Interns are placed at community-based organizations for 4 days each week and spend 1 day at LEAP.
Applications are due March 9, 2015 | Stipend is $2,500 upon successful completion 
 

Asian American Donor Program (AADP)

College Internship Program - Alameda, CA | 3 months
AADP is offering a paid internship for undergraduates and recent grads to assist in the recruitment of potential stem cell donors and work on office-related tasks. Interns will get the opportunity to become part of a dynamic, enthusiastic and supportive team committed to saving lives. Internships available: College Internship Program, Social Media Intern, and Film Production Intern.

Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC)

Internship - Washington, DC | Dates Flexible
The Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC is accepting applications for unpaid internships for undergraduate and law students interested in practical field work experience on civil rights issues.

 Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC)

Internship - Washington, DC | Flexible
The APALRC has internship opportunities available during the summer on a full-time basis.  For academic year interns, Interns should possess proficiency in at least one Asian language.  An understanding or interest in issues confronting the Asian American community is necessary, and experience working with Asian American communities is a plus.

 Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (APADRC)

Internships  - Los Angeles, CA | Flexible - 4 months
The Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center provides mediation and conflict resolution services to the diverse communities in the Los Angeles region.We are dedicated to serving traditionally underserved and under-represented people in order to ensure equal access for all. Positions available: Conflict Resolution Specialist, Volunteer and Intern Coordinator, Outreach and Marketing Assistant

 The Getty

Multicultural Undergraduate Internship Program - Los Angeles, CA | 10 weeks between June and August
*Students must reside or attend college in Los Angeles County
Aiming to encourage greater diversity in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, the program provides funding for internships at cultural organizations across Los Angeles, including at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa.  The Foundation's support enables organizations to host students in full-time, paid internships for ten weeks during the summer.

 Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center

Internships - Washington, DC | Dates Flexible
Interns have the opportunity to develop an APA research project centered on their scholarly interest. The duration of an internship may range from 10-15 weeks depending on academic quarter systems or semesters. Each work week spans from 20 to 40 hours.

 Asian American Arts Centre

Internships - New York, NY | Dates Flexible
We are currently looking for students who are interested in working at a non-profit visual art organization throughout the year. Volunteers are also needed in all areas. Internships are available in Visual Arts, Folk Arts, Research, Education, Development, Graphics, and Archives.

 American Institute in Taiwan

Commercial Section Internship Program - Taipei and Kaohsiung | Dates Flexible
AIT is a private, non-profit corporation established to carry out relations between the people of the United States and the people of Taiwan. The Commercial Section is charged with the mission of helping U.S. firms export their goods and services to Taiwan. To accomplish this mission, we conduct a number of services on behalf of the U.S. Department of Commerce and offer a variety of resources and services to assist U.S. companies entering the Taiwan market.

 Taiwan Tech Trek

2015 Program - Around Taiwan | June 27 - August 15, 2015
TTT is an eight-week program for youths of Taiwanese ancestry aged 18~30. They will be recruited from various countries through a selective application process. Interns will participate in a six-day group orientation and thereafter proceed to their designated internship positions throughout Taiwan for seven weeks of internship.
Applications are due February 12, 2015 | Stipend is NT$600 each day 
 

AID Summer

English Teaching Volunteer - Around Taiwan | July 5 - August 1, 2015
Volunteers will participate in training courses during the first week then teach English at one of various remote schools during the second and third weeks. A tour of various areas of Taiwan will be conducted during the last week.

 Camp Taiwan

Summer Counselor - Wanli, New Taipei City, Taiwan | June 22 - August 24, 2015
Camp Taiwan is an American style summer camp for children ages 5-16. There are 8 one-week sessions each with 120 campers. Camp Taiwan seeks both Taiwanese and Taiwanese American camp counselors who are current college students or recent graduates and enjoy working with children.
