Hi Brooke

It’s hard for us to take a position on a bill that isn’t in print yet. Do you know when LegInfo will catch up with your latest gut and amend?

I’m copying our Plastics/Toxics team here — I’m sure they’ll be interested. Great that Senator Umberg is responding to the near-catastrophe in Garden Grove.

Just for your information, we’re an all-volunteer group…and we normally address support letters to the author, so that we don’t have to send separate letters to successive committees, unless there have been substantive amendments. We send OPPOSE letters to the chair of a committee we want to amend or kill a bill.

Thanks for reaching out!

Janet

Good afternoon Janet,

I hope you’re doing well! I wanted to follow up on this request, and provide more context. The Senator would love to have Climate Action on as support!

Thank you for considering supporting SB 883 (Umberg). The bill will first be heard in Assembly Emergency Management on June 29th. You can submit a letter of support here, California Legislature Position Letter Portal. Please address the letter to the chair, Assembly member Rhodesia Ransom.

The bill has been set to be heard second in the Assembly Committee on Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials on Tuesday, June 30th. Support letters can be submitted to the portal via the following link https://calegislation.lc.ca.gov/Advocates/ .   The committee’s deadline for receiving letters of support is by 5:00pm at least 8 days prior (the Monday one week prior to the hearing). Please address this letter to the chair Assembly member Damon Connolly. I’ve attached a template letter of support here for your convenience, as well as a fact sheet. Please let me know if you have any questions

Thank you,

Subject: SB 883 (Umberg) Support

Good morning Janet,

I’m reaching out on behalf of Senator Umberg. We are introducing a new piece of legislation that targets chemical storage facilities, aimed at addressing the recent disaster in our district in Garden Grove. We would be honored to have Climate Action CA on as support. I’m attaching the bill language we just crossed, please keep this confidential as it is not in print yet. Please let me know if you have any questions, and hopefully we can work together soon!

Thank you,

Brooke McNeill | Senate Fellow

Office of Senator Tom Umberg

Hi Janet,

I completely understand, the amendments were crossed over a week ago and we thought they would be in print by now, I really apologize for the inconvenience. The bill was referred to committee’s this morning so we expect the bill will be in print tonight or tomorrow morning. Again, I am so sorry for the inconvenience. Additionally, it’s completely fine if the support letter is addressed to Senator Umberg, I completely understand the restraint of a volunteer organization and deeply appreciate all of your commitment to protecting our environment. I’m attaching the bill language, that should be in print shortly. Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Hi all

Umberg has requested our support for this bill (a gut and amend starting in the Assembly, having passed the Senate in its previous incarnation), which is a response to the near-disaster in Garden Grove.

It’s just in print today (or late last night).

Janet:
It’s a good bill for public safety, but I don’t see that it has any connection to climate. We should support as individuals.

Steve
