EGAD!!!

AB 2226, as introduced, Blanca Rubio. Reusable grocery bags.

Existing law prohibits a store, as defined, from providing a precheckout bag, as defined, to a customer unless the precheckout bag is a compostable bag that meets certain criteria or a recycled paper bag. Existing law defines a “precheckout bag” for this purpose to mean a bag provided to a customer before the customer reaches the point of sale, that is designed to protect a purchased item from damaging or contaminating other purchased items in a checkout bag, or to contain an unwrapped food item.

This bill would repeal those provisions.

How do we organize to stop this?

Hi Shirley and Plastics Team,

Yes, this is an unfortunate bill being pushed to undo the plastic bag ban. in California. I will be attending the hearing on Monday, April 6 here in Sacramento to speak out against this bill to the committee. I urge anyone who is interested in giving a "me too" statement to join me.

I have been warned that this bill is being backed by big oil lobby money and will likely pass through committee. If/once this happens, we can write a strongly worded opposition letter and potentially a petition for people to sign. I will keep you all updated as this develops.

Again, please let me know if you want to get involved with these action in any way. Thank you!
