So, our first get-together was pretty interesting! A few people reflected on the need for deeper conversations to go on if there is going to be long-term organizing at cabrillo; to undertake a radical collective study of history, of the many theories of society and its transformations and the way they have worked out in practice. We decided to go to some of the roots of modern anti-capitalist thought with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels' 1848 "Communist Manifesto", which lays the framework for the schools of thought known today as marxist, expounding the basic theory that the contradictory and self-destructive processes of capitalism will eventually provoke the laboring classes to create a self-organized revolution and a new, anarchist society. Don't freak out, it is really not that long or scary! http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/index.htm Along with the difference between 'communism as theorized by Marx' and 'what most people think of when you say the word communism' we will also be talking about continuing to organize with EOPS, unionized workers and others at our school and in our communities and networks beyond school, like for instance for the upcoming May Day events. Hope to see you there... refreshments may be served (?) Thursday, April 15, 2:30pm Room 1091 (behind the library - but we'll probably move outside by 3 if it's nice)
