Clay - Pretty sure ours is a forespar but I only used it once and can't say that I really have the hang of it yet. The boat is put away for the winter but I can check it out when I'm there in the next couple of weeks and get back to you.

Thanks, Ron. What we are interested in is the size of your whisker
pole with our J of 17 feet. We have been looking at poles and it
seems Forespar covers that market pretty well. There is also the
choice to construct one out of the available parts on the market. We
like the ability to extend or reduce the length of the pole for use or
storage.

It boils down to being a useful thing that you may use more frequently
if it is easy to use. We have an Isomat mast with the ring on the
front of the mast in the Isomat channels. There is also a ring on the
front of the mast above where the halyard for the staysail comes out
of the mast. I do not know if that is to help store a pole or for a
block to help with guys for the pole.

How do you store your pole? Is it a fixed length or can you extend
it? What is it's diameter? Length? What types of ends are you
using? The latching trigger seems to be an attractive solution. We
talked to the whisker pole guru (opps, that is a word that is going
away) at Bacon"s Sails last week and the pole they recommended would
probably be a challenge for me to handle.

Happy New Year to the Group. You know, I think the days are getting
longer...:)

Our pole can be extended and is stored in chocks on deck. Can't say that I really like that arrangement though. I'm pretty sure that the chock fasteners have leaked in the past and the pole is a little bit in the way at times. On our old boat we stored the pole on the mast which kept it out of the way and also made it easier to deploy because one end could stay attached to the mast while I dealt with the other. We only had about 8 weeks on Noodin this last summer (we just bought her) and we had enough to learn that I didn't even think about using the whisker pole until our last day on the water. It took a little head scratching but I did get it figured out and I'm sure it will work fine. Getting it out of the chocks and wrestling it into place was a chore though. I'm sure it will get easier with practice but I doubt it will ever be easy. Having written this, I'll have to have a look to see if I can mount it on the mast with the hardware that I have. We're planning a trip to the boat on January 12th so I can get more detail then if you like.

Clay and Leslie - I owe you an apology because I didn't get the information that I promised. We made it to the boat as planned but by the time we got our chores done, and got the large block of ice out of our winter cover, it was cold and getting dark. Hopefully you've find just the right whisker pole without my help. Sorry I didn't get it done.

Ron
