I am looking at replacing the old hatch hinges on our boat. I have found a source at a decent price and thinking of jumping on them while they are available. I am away from the boat by 3 hours and it seems that spring is having a hard time springing here in Ohio. Wind 25 -30 Kts and a low of 33 F on Lake Erie tonight.

My question is, does anyone know if the deck attachment part of the hatch hinges are through bolted or just screwed into the deck. I would like to freshen up the look with new hinges but do not have the desire to remove the overhead material to do it.

Thanks in advance,

On my boat they are just screwed into the deck.

Hi Breck,
That would be good. These chromes bronze hinges start to look bad after 20 plus years. I could get them re-chromed but not sure what that would cost.

Yea followed that in one of the threads. We put lifters on the hatches which really helped opening and closing them.
Thanks

Ok great. We now have to replace the plexiglass. It seems last year something caused the coating to start flaking off. It did it in odd patterns. Reminded me of that magnetic toy you had as a kid full of iron filings and u could make patterns with the magnetic wand. Tried a number of things but just made it worst.

When you replace the plexiglass choose your sealant very carefully. Use only a sealant that you know will not have any out gassing as it cures. I can tell you its not silicone based. 3m makes one and of course it's expensive. Check with a commercial glass or a plexiglass supplier for the right stuff. Yes, I did learn this the hard way. Replaced. All my hatch plexiglass years ago and a week later when I got back to my boat all the glass had cracks everywhere connecting all the screws.

Wow thanks. I will assume black 5200 does not fit that category.
I will definitely research this. Where did you get the replacement glass from and what exactly did you use?
Thanks

I found some 3/8" lexan that was dark grey  at a plastic supply co in San Antonio. They cut it for me to size and beveled the edges. I drilled and countersunk the screw holes which was very easy Drill the holes slightly larger than the screws you use to avoid stress in the plastic and don't  use a cordless drill to mount the pieces unless you can set it to low torque. It was a little more expensive that plexiglass but the whole thing ,for all three hatches ,was less than $75.
Let me know if you don't have access to the material Ill be glad to get it here and ship it. The shop is only a mile from my home.  I wouldn't use 5200 as you will likely never get it apart if you need to for any reason in the future.

Hey Chip
I am not sure what it is put down with but it is coming up hard.
I sincerely appreciate the offer but I should find what I need here in Ohio.
I assume the lexan will be stronger. Has it held up ok?
Thanks for all the tips.

Before I put the lexan down I installed a strip of black butyl rubber tape that has some adhesive surface. It came from a commercial window installation company, 1" wide x about 1/16 thick and it came in a roll that was enough for all my hatches then I used the  butyl sealant they advised for lexan. they said this butyl tape was commonly used on fixed windows on high rise buildings. I figured it couldn't hurt and so far after four years all the hatches are looking good.

Found a piece locally. Enough for my needs. It is 1/2 inch I hesitated but the local guys made the price right at $65 plus $10 for the edges.
Not bad.
