Getting ready to get the engine turned over and checked prior to a purchase of a CR 38, 1983. What is the location of the Engine battery and size, ie, group 27, 31 or D8?

Thanks,
Stephen

Stephen,
I have a group 27 for my starter battery and 4 group 31's for my house bank. My starter battery is located under my port side settee and  3 house bank batteries are located under the companion-way steps and 1 in the cockpit locker. This probably won't help you much since I have an XL model. The engine is located under the galley sink which is forward of the companion-way.
I'm sure someone else in the group will help you locate your batteries. Check pullout panels/lids in your cabinets/lockers and underneath cushions etc. Good luck with the survey.

Stephen my engine battery is in under quarter berth I had two house banks one under quarter berth and the other in port side sail locker. I eliminated the port side bank and put 4 golf cart batteries in starboard side next to my motor battery. They fit in original pocket. #⃣ 51 38

So what is your total Amps on the house bank?

I would assume around 450 depending on the exact battery. Most golf cart batteries are 6V, around 225Ah. You can go a big higher or lower.

Kale, with 5 batteries on starboard, do you sail faster on a starboard tack?  I've only 3 (starter + 2golf cart) on stbd, and I list just a little.

Steve ,Mickey. I have 4 -225amp 6 volt for house battery  motor battery is group 24 not sure of amps. I am very happy with the golf cart batteries. Mickey ever since I owned this boat she listed to port, this is due to the fact of the house bank, antiquated refrigeration, galley stove and hot water heater under galley sink, all on port side. Since I eliminated refrigeration with 2 cold plates, house battery bank I have no list at all. I am in process of adding a cool blue system from Technautics in California it is much lighter and will use only one cold plate.

Why are you going with a cold plate? Its my understanding that this is old technology.

The compressor is very small tiny by my old one it runs on less the one amp hour when system is charged up. It still uses a cold plate system. The guys at cool blue sell a lot of these they seem to not consider it old technology what was old was the out dated compressor.

I have one of those Cool Blue units on my 2003 CR42. Cools a fridge/freezer combination and uses about 6 amps when running. One disadvantage of a holding plate is the time it takes to defrost.

Hi Thierry, my boat has huge boxes 11 cubic feet, 8 for refrigeration 3 for freezer the guys made me a compressor system large enough to make a spill over from freezer side. I may just use refrigerator side and use freezer side for storage. I can always convert it later. I am going to remodel galley area this summer I am thinking of cutting down refidge boxes and putting some sort of navigation station in facing my port settee. This may be more ambitious then I want to get into. The size of boxes are very large made in days when we didn't have all this shelf stable foods we now have. Sooo I thought?

We had the Technautics in our Fisher and it was a great system, one plate lots of cold, low voltage, easy to install, just study the laying of the coolant pipe as you cannot kink it but a small bit.
