Howdy y'all
Anyone have any comments on crossing the bay bridge-tunnel? I'm looking at coming in at night, so would like to avoid the main channel.
North channel bridge clearance is listed at 75ft. But I've heard people say that none of the spans are tall enough to pass under.

Anyone? Bueller?

I've always used the north tunnel channel  (not bridge)when in bound..

Mickey, there are two openings over tunnels....one is closer to Norfolk/Virginia Beach and the one North of that opening is closer to the Fisherman's Island side but is not traveling under the bridge at Fisherman's Island.  That northern channel over that other tunnel is an easy, well lite "hole" in the bridge tunnel.

Piece of cake.

Thanks, Leslie, and everyone. Good to know that the tunnel entrance is well lit and easy.  I think current plans puts us there in the middle of a moonless night. (I'm guessing the entrance of the Chesapeake will be much easier than navigating up the Delaware bay at night.:)

I also thought the only openings were at the tunnels.  But there are actually three channels: two tunnels and a bridge span:

- Thimble Shoal channel is over the South tunnel
- Chesapeake channel is over the North tunnel
- North channel is under Trestle C of the bridge-tunnel, near the North end of the bridge-tunnel before fisherman's Island. Bridge clearance on chart is 75ft, and we also verified this by calling the number on the charts.

(There's also Fisherman's Island inlet, with a 40ft bridge between Fisherman's ISland and Cape Charles; this inlet is irrelevant to entrance into the Chesapeake bay.)

Cheers
mickey
