Hi everyone,

You may all know this, but I spoke to a man at Cabo Rico this morning who told me they have just moved into new premises in Costa Rica. He said the stories about their being out of business were an internet rumour that went viral.

I have no reason to doubt him. They are looking for drawings to help me with a rudder bearing problem, and had the history of our particular boat, so obviously the firm is fully active.  Very good news.

INdeed good news if true, Steve. I'd bet a bunch of us here on the list are still skeptical :)

Steve
I am not sure which story is an internet rumor. But the paper work and the suppliers I have talked to support the one that has been around for quiet some time. That said I hope the make a "solid" return.

Steve I read your post about Cabo Rico rising from the ashes and I am intrigued.  I am also in need of a set of anchor well grates for my CR 34, hull #2.

Does this mean that Cabo Rico has a phone number or email address where folks can call to order boat parts, new boats or get advise about our vessels?  Is there an address here in the States or only in Costa Rica? Do you have a contact name or does one ask for the Parts Department?

I will look forward to further updates.

Fraser still emails from fra...@caborico.com. I don't have an active phone number for him.

My wife's co worker says there have been alot of trucks coming and going. Maybe this is part of the move to a new shop.

Thank you Steve.  I had emailed Fraser but have not heard anything back yet.  I will give him some more time to respond.  It may not be something they are interesting in providing or doing but I would like it if he can advise.

I appreciate you thinking of me.  :)

with kind regards,

Leslie

Hi Leslie,

I'd try the phone. People are very good at ignoring e-mails unless there is something clearly in it for them.  Come to think of it, Frazer never got back to me as he promised he would.

Best wishes

Steve

They where out of production, the last ones built where in 2005. Cabo Rico filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and I will believe it when I see a new boat at a boat show. I have one of the last 38s built 1998 CR38 XL MK 2 #181.

They delivered a 36 and a 42 in 2007, and a 47 pilothouse in 2008.  To my knowledge, those were the last boats that they finished.

Just to add to the confusion...
I spoke to someone last week who is looking to buy CR42 - 11 and has spoken with Frazier. He indicated that CR is working out of a different facility in San Jose. No confirmation, of course.

Bob,
I have hull# 190 which is also a 38' XL MKII it was commissioned in '05. As Thierry said there were a few more boats built up to 2008 or so.

Hopefully Frasier fares well and gets the line up and running again.

My family and I are headed down to Costa Rica at the end of March.  I just emailed Fraser to see what the plant status is and to request a visit to the site while in San Jose.

We'll see.....

If it's true, that would be great.  I hope the owners of the three unfinished hulls finally get possession of their boats!

I never got a response from Frazier regarding the plant. With little time in San Jose and no luck searching leads on location, I struck out.

Have you guys read the book "Sailing Down a Mountain"? It about a couple that builds a Tiberon back in 1970s right at/near the CR plant. Talks about the early days of CR. Apparently the Tiburon was originally named the TransAm '36.

SO far, its a great read.

They own an art gallery in Key West... here are some picks Helen has of the adventure on their website:

I am planning a 10 day trip to Costa Rica in May and we have a local tour guide looking into trying to let us get a look at their old or new facilities.  I would welcome any information anyone can provide to help make this happen I promise to post plenty of pictures and stories if I get a look at their place.

I sent an email to 'fra...@caborico.com' 3 days ago but no response yet.  fingers crossed!!

Hello All.  I have no firsthand knowledge, although I’m told that the operation has been moved.  As it turns out, I’m going to Costa Rica on the 24th, for a couple weeks.  The first week I’ll be on a Habitat for Humanity crew building houses in a small village.  Patti is joining me the second week for some R&R in Manuel Antonio region.  I hope to find time to scout out San Jose a bit and hopefully see the plants (old and new.)  I’ll pass along whatever I learn.  Needless to say, I’d love to see them back in operation.

I would be interested in anything you find out as I will be booking my trip next month for 2 weeks in costa rica in may.  I may not get another chance at costa rica for many years so I definitely want to make every effort to visit CR while I have the chance!

thanks!
