Tap it lightly with a hammer as another turns the key.

If the large battery cable to the starter has B+ current, and we know the switch is good since the selenoid clicks, then pull the starter and take it to a rebuilder; have it bench tested and if bad have it rebuilt.  hope its not too much of a bear to remove !!
Best,

Clean the grounds. Change the push button start switch, jump the solenoid,  check all wire connections. Change the starter. Mine is intermitant and need to clean the grounds.  I have done all else.

Dear David,

You didn't mention what engine you have. My wife and I have a 1984 CR 38, with a Westerbeke engine, and I had to replace the starter because of similar issues. If it is the same engine I can tell you about removing the starter, but please first let me know if the engine is the same. Servicing the solenoid without removing the starter is probably impossible. As others have said, you may be able to check if it is working by testing the voltage at the motor when you turn it over. However, I'm not sure that the output terminal from the solenoid is visible. I seem remember there is just one terminal at the back where the starter cable connects.

Best wishes
