I appreciate the advice. (And I am looking for an “insurance” survey).

I will absolutely check!

I’ve had several insurance surveys. My insurance, and I believe also Geico,
accepts any certified surveyor. One surveyor did tell me that insurance do
not accept his surveys (I think because he was also a broker) so be sure to
ask.

The question is do you want a “good” surveyor or one that will suffice for
insurance? Also, insurance surveys are in my experience less detailed than
pre-purchase surveys.

The surveyor I used last time was quick and easy:
Curtis Sarratt
SARRATT MARINE SERVICES, LLC
Phone: (410) 279-3546 1414 Catlyn Pl. Annapolis MD 21401
Sarratt...@msn.com By

But please always listen to Thierry's advice :) Do check with your
insurance company.

I used Curtis on a recent pre-purchase survey and thought he did a great
job. If anyone comes across a decent insurance carrier for basic liability,
please let me know.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Geoff,

I had a pre purchase survey done on my NE400 in August of 24 @ Herrington Harbour in Deale MD.

Todd Taylor  +1 (410) 725-1641
Very thorough & professional.
Quite satisfied.

Thanks all. I did not succeed in getting insurance after my purchase through the escrow company in Florida handling the transaction. I heard GEICO can be not too hard to get but could use some advice on that. Is it just liability to that you typically need for a 1985 boat? Do you have to have it?

Thanks,

Steve

I was able to get some insurance through Progressive in Florida when we first boat our 1979 Cabo Rico 38, but it does have some storm stipulations.  Then I was able to obtain insurance through CG united via Anjo Insurance in Antigua up to 100o nautical miles out from Antigua.  Now I am uninsured and told nobody will only give you liability insurance.  I was trying to obtain insurance for a wider portion of the world to deal with my Panama Canal transit and Pacific crossing out to the South Pacific.  No US company seems to be able to find any insurer that will take on a boat this old.  Additionally, no US insurer will only do liability.

Geico I believe is out of covering sailboats.

Call progressive but for the best service and options call Kate. She has been at it a minute and knows all the options.

I believe my neighbor's sailboat is still insured by GEICO, but they may have changed that recently; I don't know.

Sheryl, have you tried Arthur Gallagher? They're insurance brokers, but I've worked with them for years now, and they've been wonderful. They have a good reputation for working with boaters. If interested, I can send you contact info.

No I have not tried them.  I had recently worked with Laura at Marineinsurance.cc and they specialize in international waters insurance, a broker company out of Florida.  She thought for sure she had two companies that would cover me, but both denied due to the age of the boat.  My situation is maybe more complex due to the ocean crossing and wide range.  I remember Progressive being relatively easy and I was surprised by it but it only covered me in Florida, which is no good now.  I think I got them through another broker in FL that specializes in marine insurance.  I had a recent survey because we had just bought the boat, but they did not make me show any proof of improvements, where CG United made me show a follow up survey with improvements made. Certainly would take contact info.  Can never hurt to try.
