Hi,
Would anyone know the specs and brand for the cutlass bearing on a Cabo Rico 34? I believe the shaft is 1 1/4.

Thank you very much for your help.

Just had happy hour in Deal Maryland with 6 CaboRico owners.

You probably know already but if the shaft moves side to side or up and down, you should be able to just reline, replace, the inside of the fitting in the pictures, and look up the details by foundry name and part number.

If the shaft is leaking inside the boat  then replace the packing as the stern tube connection. if you use PTFE packing with graphite you can tighten and run safely drip free

Same goes for the rudder shaft gland although they may take different sizes square x-section

It takes a Morse Cod bearing Both shaft and rudder shaft use 1/4” packing.  I like western trading graphite and their syntec grahite greasel

I shouldn't have written last night. I was a passenger in a car on a rough road.  The cutlass bearing on my 91 C/R 38 is 1 1/4" X 2 X 5.  It is a Johnson "BITE". or a  Morse "COD".  One should hone the I.D of the tail housing a little to allow for a more relaxed, but not loose fit so its easier to replace next time.  The best packing I have found is the Western Pacific Trading GTU Graphtex Ultra and their Syntec PTFE packing grease.  Both the prop shaft and rudder shaft use 1/4" packing.  The rudder port is a Buck Algonquin 00RP125 or depending on the originals length, the longer 00RP125L  Call Buck or measure the original once the rudder is dropped.  The top of port inside boat is "Glassed" in.  You need to take a Fein tool and cut the fiberglass away, then drive it up out from the bottom using an air hammer.
Best Regards,
Garboard

Hi Tom and Brian,

If I understand correctly the CR 42, 38 and 34 all have a 1 1/4 shaft with a Buck Algonquin stern casting.

And this casting will take a 11/4 x2x5 cutlass bearing of which Bite (Johnson) and Cod (Morse-Duramax) are two examples of.

Sorry, for all these questions but the boat is in Europe and I couldn’t manage to remove the prop before coming home. Thus, I want to buy the removal too and cutlass bearing before returning.

Thank you very much for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

Luc:
Good luck on your project.  This info is correct. If you find a blind hole puller that is affordable and works send me the info on it ? I pulled my shaft,  I removed my set screws, heated them first, then slit the cutlass bearing just below the screw center with a new fine tooth hack saw blade with a rubber hose on the end for a handle. Then put a 1 1/2” long hex head bolt in the holes, tightened them, crushed the bearing, opened it up and pulled it out with vise grips.  They make various short saw blade holders that would work.  Good luck. They are usually tight !
Best,
Brian
