My wife and I just purchased a Northeast 400 hull #19 (1999).

Love to hear from other owners and share info regarding in-mast furling, other equipment & Cabo's condition.

(We called them on 1/15 and found the line disconnected.)

We picked the boat in Hilton Head and we are in Ft. lauderdale getting it prepaid for a winter cruise to the southern Bahamas.
Sooooo much to do.

Lucky you.  I’m stuck in cold Philadelphia this winter.  If you need a local Cabo Rico expert, Kevin Bray is your man.  He used to work for Cabo Rico and lives in Ft Lauderdale.  kjbr...@netscape.net

What a great thing and a wonderful design. Darlene and I have always thought long and hard about that boat. Best wishes for a Holiday Season aboard and a wonderful New Year ahead.

George,
Maybe a lot to do in your eyes but maybe if she is really ship shape and safe not much needed. Enjoy the boat. Do what you have to do to be safe this season. Then sit back and see what you really need, after the first winter aboard. You might be surprised how the list changes and actually becomes smaller as you spend some time aboard. I know, I have changed my cruising list many times. Now that we are not going it is really short.LOL
But I am very serious. Be careful not to over do the first year. Especially until you decide where you are actually going to cruise. That in the end, will dictate how much you spend and what you need. You can always add later as things change.
Best,
Larry

We arrived s few weeks ago in lauderdale from a two day offshore passage from ST. Augustine.
Just finished replacing the hot water tank, rebuilding the windlass and parts of propane system. Not too bad so far.
Had issues with the in-mast furler on the way.  It appears to be a Cabo/Schaefer bad dream.
We left the boat yesterday for a few week visit back to the higher latitudes (Nantucket).
Thank you for the contact in Ft. Lauderdale.  We will be sure to contact him when we return after the New Year.

What Larry said!  After the first winter aboard, I installed a diesel heater, which had been only tangentially on my list.  Now I'm sitting in a comfortable bloat while it's blowing outside. Of course, in the Bahamas perhaps I would opted for an icemaker :)

Yes....I have to take a long look and breath in and out.  The boat was not used to cruise so we have some live aboard things to work on.
Trying to decide between three 120 watt solar panels on the coach roof  or a genset. I'm leaning towards the solar.
Have not heard from any NE 400 owners yet.  I love to hear how they did with their in-mast furler.
I tried to set up a meeting with Fraser Smith pres on Cabo but their phone was disconnected on Thursday.

Hi George,

I'm delighted to hear that you've purchased a NE400.    We have hull number 14 (late '97) and have owned her for 11 years now and remain very pleased with her.  The looks don't appeal to everyone,  but there is a certain purposeful look about the boat.  We find 'Briez' to be an excellent sailboat,  particularly just off the wind and she's very stiff.  Indeed we can often sail at 8 knots or so with only 10 degrees of heel.

With the benefit of a feathering 4 blade prop, and a clean bottom,  we were making 9.25 knots sailing up the Lezardrieux estuary at the start of our summer cruise this year,  with all tanks full and food for 3 weeks:  the reaction from other sailboats is often worth seeing!

If you're curious,  there is a collection of raggedy, un-edited video clips on my MobileMe gallery at:- http://gallery.me.com/keith.laker/.

'Briez' is - to the best of my knowledge - the only NE400 imported into the UK (we are in the Channel Islands) so there aren't many to compare her with over here.  She was rigged in the UK with Selden spars and Hood sails.  Both are still looking good and I've never had any problem at all with the Selden in-mast system.  (If you're not familiar with it,  it is driven by a continuous loop of line from the cockpit,  but has the fail-safe ability to insert a winch-handle into the mast drum and furl from the mast.   I only used this once when the long-splice on the braided rope failed).  We added a furling cruising chute a couple of seasons ago and this has been a great success in lighter airs.

Negative points are that I consider the engine installation noisy for a boat that may be motored a lot and I have small leaks on at least two of the tanks.  I'm told it's possible to remove these without dismantling the joinery and I may do this next year.  I also have more gel-coat crazing and small void defects than I would expect on a boat that's not yet 13 years old.

The acid test which I often ask myself is what would I change her for?  Actually I can think of nothing better that meets our particular set of criteria.  Everyone is different of course,  but this boat continues to deliver all I hoped for when we bought her.  I'm sure you'll have many happy miles with Fathom This.

Best wishes,

Keith Laker
