Hi George,
I'm delighted to hear that you've purchased a NE400. We have hull number 14 (late '97) and have owned her for 11 years now and remain very pleased with her. The looks don't appeal to everyone, but there is a certain purposeful look about the boat. We find 'Briez' to be an excellent sailboat, particularly just off the wind and she's very stiff. Indeed we can often sail at 8 knots or so with only 10 degrees of heel.
With the benefit of a feathering 4 blade prop, and a clean bottom, we were making 9.25 knots sailing up the Lezardrieux estuary at the start of our summer cruise this year, with all tanks full and food for 3 weeks: the reaction from other sailboats is often worth seeing!
'Briez' is - to the best of my knowledge - the only NE400 imported into the UK (we are in the Channel Islands) so there aren't many to compare her with over here. She was rigged in the UK with Selden spars and Hood sails. Both are still looking good and I've never had any problem at all with the Selden in-mast system. (If you're not familiar with it, it is driven by a continuous loop of line from the cockpit, but has the fail-safe ability to insert a winch-handle into the mast drum and furl from the mast. I only used this once when the long-splice on the braided rope failed). We added a furling cruising chute a couple of seasons ago and this has been a great success in lighter airs.
Negative points are that I consider the engine installation noisy for a boat that may be motored a lot and I have small leaks on at least two of the tanks. I'm told it's possible to remove these without dismantling the joinery and I may do this next year. I also have more gel-coat crazing and small void defects than I would expect on a boat that's not yet 13 years old.
The acid test which I often ask myself is what would I change her for? Actually I can think of nothing better that meets our particular set of criteria. Everyone is different of course, but this boat continues to deliver all I hoped for when we bought her. I'm sure you'll have many happy miles with Fathom This.
Best wishes,
Keith Laker
