Dave,

I had a similar set up as you describe.  I have a 2003 CR42. From early on I could smell the holding tank below decks every time someone would use the head.  I determined that the smell came from the siphon break vent in the head discharge hose.  The holding tank vent and the vent of the siphon break were T-ed together and then plumbed into the overboard vent fitting. I completely removed the T-assembly and vented the holding tank directly to the overboard vent fitting.  (I also opened up the vent by removing the screens; holding tank ventilation is important in reducing smell.)  The siphon break vent in the head discharge hose should not let air out if it is in good condition.  By what you describe I suspect that the little duck bill valve inside this discharge siphon break is deformed and leaking.  These little rubber pieces should be replaced occasionally.

Subject: [caborico] CR 38 Head Vent

We own 1988 CR 38 XL #130, Scout, and we're having issues with the head vent burping sewage onto the deck when the toilet is flushed.  There is a vent plumbed off of the top of the siphon break for the toilet drain that "T's" into the vent for the tank.  From the "T" there is a looped hose leading to the vent outlet on the port outboard side of the cockpit.

The vent lines are clear, and my first thought is that the rise from the siphon break to the vent exit is pretty minimal, resulting in sewage overflow during pumping.  I'm considering attempting to remove the loop in the hose to eliminate a sink trap effect which would allow liquid to remain in the line, thus being forced out the next time someone flushes.

Has anyone experienced this issue?  If so, what was your solution?

So have you closed off the siphon vent hose Thierry? - it is no longer vented anywhere?

No, the siphon vent works as designed. It lets air in, but not out, so there is no smell.

One would think Fraser, being a "Brit" would have done us all a favor and installed "Lavac"   Stink Free Loos on our vessels !    Has anyone done that ?  I'm considering it.... I'll check the threads.
Best,
Brian

Brian,
Fraser is Canadian.
I have a Lavac on my CR42.

Thanks Thierry.  I know he spends a good deal of time in Canada but for some reason I thought he was originally from the UK.  I have used the Lavac heads and like them.  Are you happy with yours and would you recommend the upgrade from a manual Raritan ?

Appreciation for the group - a quick search 4.8.2026, led me to this link and did everything but change the hoses on my 38 pilothouse.

This “T” was puzzling me for sure.
