Subject: Help prioritize bicyclists Automatic Emergency Braking and AV standards in transportation bill
To:

Hi Folks,

You are getting this email because you have a member(s) of the Energy & Commerce Committee in your state/ district. This committee has jurisdiction over car safety standards, and writes that piece of the larger transportation reauthorization bill.

The leaders of the Energy & Commerce Committee, both the Democrats and Republicans, are asking for stakeholders to submit their car safety standard priorities they would like to see included in the reauthorization bill.

I'm writing to ask your organization to submit comments to the committee.

I have attached the League's priorities (already submitted) for
  • Bicyclist- Motorcyclists Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and
  • A vision test for Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) / a performance measure that shows that AVs can detect and respond to vulnerable road users.
Please feel free to add others or adapt these to reflect your priorities.

Submit comments via email:

Subject line: [your organization] Car safety standard priorities for Transportation reauthorization

feel free to personalize any of this...

Body:
  • Say something like "Thank you for the opportunity to submit our priorities"
  • Include one or two sentences about your organization, what you do and the state/ area that you serve. [The Florida Bicycle Association is a statewide bicycle advocacy organization with a mission to make Florida better for people who want to bicycle and for people who need to bicycle.
And
  • Say that you are attaching your priorities for car safety standards that [ will make the roads safer for all users, whatever terms you like to use]
Attachment
  • You can adapt the attached document to reflect your priorities
  • You can cut and paste these priorities onto your letterhead.
  • You can just attach the document as is and say you are writing to express support for the attached League of American Bicyclists priorities.
If you have any questions, just email me. Comments are due next Wednesday, August 20th

I'll be sending this out to the larger BikeWalkAdvocates group- but your help is extra important and appreciated because of the tie to the committee members. (if you are not on the BikeWalkAdvocates google group please 🚴🏼‍♀️ Join . The email list is an opportunity to learn and share with other state and local advocates.

thanks,
Caron

You are getting this email because you have members of the Energy & Commerce Committee in California. This committee has jurisdiction over car safety standards and writes the car safety standards section of the larger transportation reauthorization bill.

Please get in touch with your Reps or all Reps to remind them that AVs should be required to detect and respond appropriately to bicyclists and pedestrians!

The League of American Bicyclists suggests we say something like "Thank you for the opportunity to submit our priorities," then include one or two sentences about your organization, what you do, and the state/ area that you serve. [The Florida Bicycle Association is a statewide bicycle advocacy organization with a mission to make Florida better for people who want to bicycle and for people who need to bicycle.]

Calif has these Reps on this committee.
You can refresh your memory about which US Rep represents you at https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative .
