FYI - this thread with Ted Rogers (bikinginla.com) about the fatal crash on Saturday is in normal reverse chronological order, starting with his post about it including links to the initial vague news reports, so it's best to start at the bottom...

Oh, I forgot to mention one thing: I've been in contact with someone who witnessed the crash.

His words: "There were no flex posts in the area where the accident happened."

The reality is there is just ten feet from a flexpost to the paint marking the crash site in the direction the cyclist was riding. My point: that's how easy it is to not notice these hazards.

My condolences to the victim's family and other close ones.

1. It's 4% and then of course levels out at the bottom.  Here is the link to the .42 mile Strava segment which averages -3.3%:

The fastest speeds on that segment are around 40mph. My PR is 33mph without particularly trying, so 40 mph is realistic for KOM and near-KOM speeds.  The speeds from today are in the 26-30 mph range. That's typical.

2. No problem. You can also use the attached images. Just look at the white and gray on the posts compared to the white and gray of the paint and pavement.  If I wanted to camouflage them, I'm not sure if I could improve this job.

I'm CCing Karl who knows the cyclist who went down earlier this year because of the posts further up the hill (behind/south of where this crash occurred).

He's familiar with the efforts made to get them removed. 

Also, some neighbors (not cyclists) who live there told me witnesses thought he slipped and lost control due to pine needles, and that there were a lot of pine needles in the bikeway on Saturday (since cleaned up).  I don't buy it. Doesn't explain the fling to the right up onto the sidewalk; snagging the flexpost with his left handlebar certainly does.  It's ten feet from the second flexpost to the  first yellow paint crash marking.

I noticed someone claiming to be the victim's sister and identifying the victim as Marcus Yepiz posted on your website, but I couldn't verify it and didn't write to her in case it's a phishing scam.

All - I had warned the Del Mar TPAC (Traffic Parking Advisory Committee) of the hazards caused by these flex posts when Al Tarkington and I reviewed the proposed design in 2017. I sent in a letter with photos and spoke before their TPAC at two meetings, butting heads with a consultant from Michael Baker who at least acknowledged it was legal to use the vehicle lane instead. Attached is a photo of the configuration on 7/25/2018. The posts then were different as well as the vegetation. The unrealistic expectation by no posts in front of the wide drainage pan is that a cyclist weaves to the left to avoid the drain pan and must duck back in if there are to stay in this short section of cycle track, another example of Class IV being "sometimes there, sometimes not." Coming downhill, a cyclist easily travels 20-30mph and is safest when simply controlling the lane through this entire stretch if they want to be predictable to motorists.

Until the sheriff's report is made public, it is impossible to know to what extent these flex posts were a contributing factor or even the primary factor that would have saved a life. 

Surely, condolences to family and friends of the cyclist who died here.

Karl, I rode this just last Saturday and it indeed sucks. Skilled and skeptical cyclists can adjust it there is no way this crap actually makes unskilled cyclists safer. Gotta wonder what these bozos are thinking, beyond their own careers that is.
