2. Mapped: We're one of America's bicycling hot spots

Pandemic-era cycling fever appears to be lingering, with the number of average daily bike trips per 1,000 people increasing from 28 to 47 in the San Diego metro between 2019-2022.

  • It was the second largest increase nationwide, putting us at 5th for overall bike trips per capita among major U.S. metros.
  • That's according to a new report from mobility data firm StreetLight Data, which uses GPS and other location data to measure urban transportation patterns.

The big picture: The annual nationwide average for daily bike trips grew 37% between 2019-2022.

As has been reported on this list as far back as 2012, Portland, Oregon, once the premier cycling city in America, continues a declining mode share now more than a decade old.

Ebike explosion has to be considered in those numbers. Bicycle use or mode share doesn't mean the same as in past decades. America isn't "bicycling" more than before 2010, they're stepping through the frames of Ebikes.

Spot on. When I park at the local YMCA, mine is usually the only conventional, non-assisted bicycle in the entire rack.
