Hi Bill,

Thanks again for chatting on Monday. You can see the story here: https://www.otdowntown.com/news/rip-mushroom-head-dot-phasing-out-bike-rider-stencil-XB6030563

While I wasn't able to incorporate much of what we discussed, I learned a lot and believe it will all be very helpful for future, more in-depth stories.

Best,
Lucy

Hi,

My name is Lucy, and I am a reporter with Straus News in Manhattan, NY. I am working on a story about the replacement of the helmeted cyclist pavement marking, and I came across an Orange County Bicycling Coalition Board Google Group thread (2026 CA MUTCD - Bicycle Signals) where you and other members discussed the change.

I would love to include your perspective as a cycling advocate. Would you be available for a brief call (no more than 15 minutes) early next week (Monday or Tuesday)?

Thank you,
Lucy Rice (845) 598-2103

to Cabo Forum, CABO Directors
JMHO, but it seems under Badvocate direction agencies are hell bent on marginalizing bicyclists in the name off promoting them.
And the effort is several years behind the times as E-things are the dominant alt mode, far exceeding pedal bikes in San Clemente, a place that's always been a pretty good bicycle town!
Bike shops are closing all over SoCal and those that remain are nearly Ebikes only. The first wave of sheister E-thing purveyors are also disappearing, slowly replaced by what seems to be a better class of businesses.
And the Blakespears and the LAB still think all this motor driven traffic should be segregated into a hardened 6' space, or worse a two way 10' cattle chute?
Americans don't need coddling to want to ride an E-thing. The timid whom Blakespear says will all come out are too chicken to ride an E-thing, period. And they won't ride a pedal bike cause it's too hard-- even if they still believe they can save the planet. Their excuses be damned, they're not gonna do it.
Our "bike industry" will not speak in our defense. It's leaders have never supported bicycling, they support bicycle sale. Their money goes onto a tiny niche, racing , mostly spent abroad to boost their egos.
So all this militant social engineering will do nothing but get people killed at intersections or banged up on high speed channelized descents.
  Be careful out there.
