A collision between a male juvenile on an ebike and an adult female on a bicycle resulted in the latter's death yesterday afternoon. The path where the incident occured runs east-west on the north border of Davis High School. The woman was declared deceased at the scene. The juvenile had minor injuries.

Yes, I know: "this is just one unrelated incident."
But in my mind it stands for hundreds of other non-fatal, most unreported hits, near hits, and annoying incidents that increase trepidation among unskilled pedal cyclists. I know for a fact that ebike presence, mere presence, on San Clemente's Beach Trail reduces pedestrian and pedal cyclist use of this amenity. Ebikers drive away other users Everywhere they go-- except in the roadway.

Ebikes and Emotos have positive potential in our overall traffic mix. But nothing with a motor belongs in pedestrian space. Period.

Tragic and too easy to knee-jerk assign blame/fault to the eBiker, but certainly tempting.
Are there facts about what led to this?

What about electrically powered wheelchairs?

I agree with Jim. Any fatal crash will be thoroughly investigated. I don't believe it will be completed until nearly all of us have forgotten about it.

And the collision occurred on a Class I path that is not part of the "roadway", so is it possible that the final report will not be posted to CCRS or anywhere else that can be accessed by a Public Information Request?

Alan, ADA protections for the disabled are, to me, very obvious. Wheel chairs, mobility devices will be exempt by any responsible author. This was never an issue until the motor driven devices marketed for performance flooded stores and the Net.
The principle is still clear to me, Nothing with a motor belongs in pedestrian space.
