Subject: Coalition Support Request: Rancho Cucamonga Park & Trail Safety Petition

Dear Walk Bike Roll CA Coalition,

I hope you’re doing well.

I’m reaching out as a Board Member of California Walks and a community leader in the Inland Empire to request your support in uplifting an urgent safety issue impacting families, youth, and active transportation users in Rancho Cucamonga.

Our community is currently mobilizing around a petition calling for critical safety improvements along park and trail corridors that are heavily used by walkers, joggers, cyclists, and children. These spaces—intended to promote health and community, are increasingly unsafe due to:

  • Lack of adequate street lighting
  • Absence of traffic and safety cameras
  • Speed limits that are too high for pedestrian-heavy areas

Tragically, on November 8, 2025, 16-year-old Joan Rodriguez Aguilar lost his life after being struck by a vehicle traveling approximately 50 mph near a park and trail. The absence of cameras also limited the ability to fully investigate the incident. This loss has deeply impacted the community and underscores the urgency of taking action.

We are advocating for three clear, community-driven solutions:

  1. Installation of street lighting to improve visibility and nighttime safety
  2. Implementation of traffic cameras to ensure accountability and deterrence
  3. Reduction of speed limits in park-adjacent corridors to better reflect their use as de facto school and family zones

Research shows that even a 10% reduction in vehicle speed can reduce pedestrian fatalities by up to 40%. These are practical, evidence-based steps that can save lives.

We respectfully ask if the Walk Bike Roll CA Coalition would:

  • Support and share this petition through your networks
  • Help amplify this issue across your platforms and partner organizations
  • Consider engaging in advocacy or technical support to advance these safety improvements locally and, potentially, as a model statewide

This is not just a local issue, it reflects broader challenges across California where infrastructure has not kept pace with community use. Together, we have an opportunity to push for safer, more equitable streets and public spaces.

Thank you for your continued leadership and commitment to safer communities. I would welcome the opportunity to connect further and align on how we can move this forward together.

In partnership,

here’s the link for your review:
