My 11-year-old elder grandson, who lives in Carlsbad, has started riding the classic (1991) Specialized Hard Rock mountain bike I bought for his dad back when he was that age. We made a 3-generation family project out of replacing the tires and brake pads, lubricating, and otherwise cleaning it up and making it fully roadworthy again, and he loves it. In my family, the parents and grandparents are aligned in insisting that the kids/grandkids ride under their own power, as all of us did (and still do).
I did watch Blakespear's webinar last night, and it was pretty good, with a panel that included a physician and a law enforcement officer. Lots of emphasis on training, including legal operation proper helmet wearing, and distinguishing classes of ebikes/emotos
