The latest news from the Global Designing Cities Initiative.
December 2021 | Updates from GDCI

Sending warm wishes and good cheer as we wrap up the year...

It's been a busy year for all of us here at GDCI. With travel restrictions still in place in many regions during this second year of COVID-19, and with team members and liaisons located across the globe, we have continued to refine our outreach strategies to best support cities in shaping safe, accessible, and inspiring streets that serve everyone. In 2021, through virtual workshops, city-led implementations, and a new Streets for Kids training program, GDCI has trained 2750 people around the globe, and supported 32 site transformation projects that led to the transformation of 12.4 km of streets

We've got some exciting developments in the works for 2022, so stay tuned for updates from our team. In the meantime, have a look at these recent highlights from our team—and here's to a safe, healthy, and promising New Year!

What's New
"Safer Streets" Police Trainings Launch in Delhi
In partnership with BIGRS, GDCI rolled out an online road safety training program to 150 Traffic Police personnel in Delhi, India. It was launched by the Deputy Commissioner of Police on December 2, 2021.

New Implementation in Recife
The recent intervention at Largo Dom Luiz in Recife created a pedestrian plaza and aimed to improve safety for all street users. After the project's launch, space allocation shifted from 79% cars and 21% pedestrians, to 48% cars and 52% pedestrians! Check out the launch in Jardim Monte Verde Plaza, too!
Designing Streets for Kids Receives Prince Michael International Road Safety Award

Project Spotlight: Santiago, Chile

Through GDCI's Streets for Kids partnership with the Ciudad Emergente Foundation, the 2021 intervention in the Santiago neighborhood of Indepencia has transformed a space that was once underused and gray into a neighborhood gathering place that serves both residents and school children. Because the pandemic demanded new, creative ways of capturing input, as part of the planning process the Ciudad Emergente team developed a kit, which was mailed to families in the area, allowing them to test new engagement techniques and elevate kids’ voices.
