Hi Jim,

It’s been a while and I hope things are going well for you and your crew! I wanted to thank you for being open to sharing your experience with me for the book “If You Want to Win, You’ve Got to Fight: A Guide To Effective Transportation Advocacy.”

Although various factors, like word limits and editorial deadlines, got in the way of our interview, I really appreciate your being open to talking about your advocacy and encouraging me in the process.

I thought you might be interested in how the project turned out, so I’m pleased to announce that the book comes out on 11/13 and is available for pre-order (the 20% off pre-order discount code is “FIGHT”). So far over 500 copies have been sold and early reviews are looking good!  Bill McKibben, co-founder of the climate group 350.org, called it “a truly useful handbook for those who want to make change.” (more blurbs are below!)

I’m so excited to get the book into the hands of people across the country so they can better advocate for transportation changes! I'm doing a big push to get the word out, and of course, I’d deeply appreciate any amount of help you can put in on that front as well.

If you’re up for it, here are some ways you can help spread the word:

  1. If you have a newsletter, please include a blurb about the book in an upcoming newsletter (a template is here

  2. Let’s put on a virtual book talk for your community! I’m always happy to hop on a Zoom and chat with folks about transportation advocacy

  3. Ask your local library to stock a copy

  4. Recommend it to a friend, coalition ally, mentee, etc

  5. It'd also be great to work together on social media posts that promote your work, and show people how the book can help them do similar work in their community. Here's a recent video I made to promote the book as an example

Also, if your organization is interested in picking up 5 or more copies, please email in...@islandpress.org to get a bulk discount.

Thanks once again for all your help with this effort to get more people skilled up as bike, street safety, and transit advocates! If you have any questions please let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

All the best,

Carter Lavin

Doug Gordon, cohost of the War on Cars podcast, said, “This should be required reading, whether you’re new to the movement or, like me, a veteran in the war on cars.”

Kea Wilson, Senior Editor, Streetsblog USA said “Frankly, it's the book the transportation reform movement has been waiting for."

Cathy Dos Santos, Executive Director of Transit Alliance Miami, called it “a practical compass that can guide advocates at all stages to win the change our communities deserve.”

Hi Jim-- Thank you once again for being open to be interviewed for the book. It is very generous of you to offer your time and expertise that way. I look forward to hearing more about your work and incorporating your lessons and stories into the book, however for the time being I will need to postpone our interview for a few months.

I have a bit of a backlog of writing to get through and so far have done over 25 general interviews with transportation advocates across the country. My hope is that after a few more months of writing, I will be ready to come back to you with more specific questions.

Thanks once again for your willingness to help on this project and I look forward to getting back to you when it is more ready to receive that help!

All the best,

I have nothing special planned for May; no out-of-internet-reach trips. Mid-afternoons on weekdays are most often available.

Hi Jim,

I'm writing a "how-to" book on transportation advocacy that will be published by Island Press in the Fall of 2025 and I was hoping to interview you to potentially include some stories or lessons learned from your bike campaigning that might be helpful for readers. Would you be up for being interviewed for the book? Would a Zoom interview sometime in April or May work for you?

Also, on 3/20, I'm hosting a free online training for transit activists called A beginner's guide to building pro-transit & bike political power.” The training will help bike supporters stup up and lead pro-bike campaigns. And next month, on 4/23, I'm partnering with “Cargo Bike Momma” Maddy Novich to host the training "How to use cargo bikes to improve your life and how to use them to win protected bike lanes. If you have folks in your network who might be interested in either/both of them, I'd appreciate it if you could help spread the word!

Sincerely,
