From my brother-in-law in Ottawa:

We've had several dooring deaths recently, so the issue has become highlighted. We've also had problems noted with the design of the dedicated bike lanes in the centre of town that are being addressed.

Wow! When I first saw a similar image I thought it was fake/photo-shopped. Impressive, and sort of sad that people don't "get it" about where to ride without this much paint/prompting.

Decades of door zone bike lanes as the minimum design standard and failure to collect crash data on dooming crashes have lulled most engineers and bicyclists into thinking door zone bike lanes aren't hazardous. Only recently have Chicago and a few other cities documented how risky riding in the door zone is.

It's not surprising that people don't "get it" about where to ride safely.  They're used to 5' bike lanes right next to parked vehicle doors.  They assume that engineers who striped these 5' lanes wouldn't unnecessarily expose travelers to hazards, so it must be safe to ride there, right?  And bicycle advocacy organizations support these lanes, because a door zone lane is better than no bike lane, right?

In fact, the answer is "no" on both counts.

But when engineers like me and advocates like you try to tell other engineers and advocates about the extreme danger of door zone bike lanes, we're dismissed.

Maggie
