Good morning John F.
Is it just me?!? It seems like I can’t live a single day without hearing the latest depressing, mind-boggling, political theater happening in our city, our state, and especially at the federal level? It’s like reality-TV hell—and it’s EXHAUSTING! But maybe that’s the whole point. Well, I can’t fix all that, but I can tell you that what we do at SAFE is NOT political theater, focused on pointing fingers or covering things up. Thanks to your help and advocacy, we ARE making a difference, and it’s not all bad and depressing. In fact, while we were putting this newsletter together, two major successes came through that SAFE directly helped make happen. They aren’t covered here, but you’ll see them in future issues—so keep an eye out. All that said, we have a challenge at SAFE. If you look at this map of SAFE Grassroots Advocacy Projects, you’ll see we have 28 different advocacy projects happening across Southern California. Most don’t know about everything we’re doing—because I’ve never told you! Hell, even most of my staff don’t know ALL the different projects we are working on. There’s simply too much happening at once. So, over the next several newsletters, we are going to be talking about ALL of our projects—and improving our website so you can track progress as it happens. If you would like to help on any of these projects, please contact the Director of LA County Advocacy, Brett Slaughenhaupt, at Br...@StreetsAreForEveryone.org or sign up as a SAFE volunteer. And remember: despite all the bad news and craziness out there, be sure to help others, be kind, and do something to take care of your surroundings, your community, and our planet. With gratitude and resolve, |

In 2023, after four years of work, SAFE successfully helped pass AB 645, the California Speed Safety Systems Pilot Program. This groundbreaking policy allows six cities across California—including three in Southern California (Glendale, Long Beach, and the City of Los Angeles)—to pilot speed safety systems designed to reduce speeding and improve conditions on high-injury corridors and in vulnerable areas such as school zones. While San Francisco has already deployed speed cameras—ticketing speeding drivers and making roads safer—implementation in the three Southern California cities has been slow, leaving vulnerable road users at continued risk of injury or death. |
When it comes to first and last mile connections (and let’s be honest, many miles in between), Los Angeles is lacking infrastructure to support non-car users. Recently, SAFE was copied in an email from Anya McCann, LCI (League of American Bicyclists, League Cycling Instructor), who was visiting LA through LAX and found herself without any Metro bike share options. The email is printed below. Anya was prepared to bike the few miles from LAX to her destination; she even brought a bicycle helmet. However, the closest station was 4 miles away. |
Transform LA: Small Steps, Big Impact!
Spend an hour or two helping SAFE understand bike and pedestrian usage along Hollywood Blvd.’s protected bike lane. We are looking for volunteers during weekday rush hours and weekend mornings.
Advocates are pushing for Long Beach to move forward with its speed systems program to implement as soon as possible. Add your name to the letter as a show of support.
Want to see Los Angeles become more transit-forward and bike- and pedestrian-friendly? Take part in our Mode Shift Action Team and join fellow volunteers. SAFE will hold its next meeting on Monday, August 25, 4:00-5:00 PM. Email br...@streetsareforeveryone.org to RSVP for the link.
If you live or work in South LA, Watts, or Unincorporated LA County in the South Bay (or know someone who does), the South Bay Cities Council of Governments and Supervisor Mitchell’s office are seeking a community representative for the Service Council. Interested community members can email applications to ja...@southbaycities.org and AY...@bos.lacounty.gov by Friday, August 29 2025 |

To make it easier to share opportunities and stay connected with our amazing volunteers, we are moving to a new volunteer platform called Bloomerang.
This will be our central volunteer database and the hub for all upcoming opportunities and shifts are posted.
|
|
|
|
As part of the transition, please take a moment to create your profile. In some cases, our Volunteer Coordinator has already transferred profiles into Bloomerang, and you can easily claim your account. Both creating a new profile and claiming an existing one can be done here: 👉 Create or claim your profile Once your profile is set up, you’ll be able to sign up for volunteer opportunities and shifts quickly and easily. If you have any questions or run into technical issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Hunter at volu...@streetsareforeveryone.org. |
Speed and pedestrian surveys help highlight safety issues along dangerous corridors, providing valuable insight for both the community and city officials. Over the next few weeks, SAFE and an action team of concerned citizens will be conducting speed and pedestrian surveys along Vista Del Mar - "Deadly Del Mar" - in Playa Del Rey. This is an activity that can be done any time and at your convenience. Email Brett Slaughenhaupt - SAFE’s Director of LA County Advocacy - br...@streetsareforeveryone.org - to learn more about how you can get involved or sign up through our new volunteer platform Bloomerang! |
