FYI.
Although the sections provided are not specific to bicycling, the Definitions section has several bicycle-related definitions, several of which deserve our attention and comment. For instance, section 24 (b) incorrectly states that a Class IV "Separated Bicycle Lane" (sic) is "... within or directly adjacent to the roadway..."

If you find errors or changes needed, please share with me and others that care.

CA MUTCD Practitioners,

Following are updates on California’s National MUTCD 2023 review and adoption efforts to develop and issue revised CA MUTCD 2026 before the January 18, 2026 deadline.

CA MUTCD 2026 Part 1 (General):

Caltrans has prepared the initial draft proposal for CA MUTCD 2026 Part 1 (General). This document was developed pursuant to Part 1 Subject Matter Experts (SME) Workgroup (WG) members review and recommendations. Part 1 SME WG members reviewed Part 1 in the new National MUTCD 2023 and compared it with the current CA MUTCD 2014 Revision 8 Part (Introduction) and Part 1 (General) to identify the changes and assess potential impacts of adopting these changes for California.

This initial draft proposal for CA MUTCD 2026 Part 1 (General) is now posted and open to public for review and comment with a closing date of 10/21/24 for submitting comments. In addition to the proposed documents for text, figures and table contents of CA MUTCD 2026, compare documents with markups are also made available and are being shared for ease in reviewing and comparison. The webpage also includes a feature within the website for submitting comments directly, while also providing downloadable forms which can be submitted electronically or through the regular mail.

CA MUTCD 2026 Part 5 (Traffic Control Device Considerations for Automated Vehicles) and Part 7 (Traffic Control for School Areas):

Please note that the initial draft proposal documents for CA MUTCD 2026 Part 5 (Traffic Control Device Considerations for Automated Vehicles) and Part 7 (Traffic Control for School Areas) were already posted and made open to public review and comments.  Comments were closed on 9/2/24 for both parts, Part 5 and 7.  Public comments submitted for these parts are currently being reviewed by respective SME WGs, to provide recommendations on response and resolution of these comments. Caltrans will consider the SME WG’s recommendations and revise Part 5 and 7 draft proposals, if needed, to prepare and post them as California Traffic Control Device Committee (CTCDC) agenda items on the CTCDC website for the upcoming CTCDC meeting on 11/7/24.  Further public reviews and comments on proposed CA MUTCD 2026 Parts 5 and 7 will be performed utilizing the CTCDC process, to consult with the local agencies and to conduct public hearings, in accordance with California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 21400 requirements.  More information and details about the CTCDC, upcoming meetings and agenda items, including Part 5 and 7 agenda items (when posted), are available at weblink: https://dot.ca.gov/programs/safety-programs/ctcdc
