"Elon Musk announced today that Tesla will enable its electric vehicle owners with (Supervised) Full Self-Driving (FSD) to 'text and drive' in 'a month or two,' without explaining how they will get around the clear laws that prohibit that."

I hope California sticks to its guns regarding texting while driving. I would love to see inattentive drivers still getting busted for texting-while-driving. (I even keep preaching to extended family members who do not agree with me that "hands-free is not brain-free." They know I will not take a phone call while driving, and that I am deliberately not even set up for hands-free.)

I have worked all of my career in data science, digital signal processing, semiconductors, and more recently, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Driver assist is just that. Tesla's refusal to use anything other than optical sensors, and "Autopilot" and "Self-Driving" marketing hype, have already proven deadly. We will eventually have safer-than-humans self-driving vehicles, but we are in that awkward "learning" stage at the moment, conducting a massive experiment with everyone's life at stake. We don't need some overpaid huckster full of financial and other conflicts telling us what is or is not yet safe. I recommend everyone watch the interview with Martin Eberhard, the co-founder of Tesla, and a real and very talented engineer, who quickly got into conflicts with Musk's delusions and got fired for speaking truth to power.

"Musk was again claiming that Tesla would finally deliver its long-promised “unsupervised self-driving” to consumer vehicles by the end of the year – something he has done every year for the last 6 years and never delivered."

Do people still use the word "vaporware" to describe these kinds of claims?

After 60+ years bicycling on California streets and highways
I'm skeptical of all technological predictions.
The roll out, plus the time it takes  to achieve the desired effects
of those technologies takes longer to become real
-- if they ever actually do.

E.g. air quality has improved significantly in the LA basin
due to AQMD and then CARB edicts,
but you can still get smogged out during prolonged
downslope winds.
CARB can't control those.

And the costs
-- in the case of clean air
it's the ban on useful solvents like denatured alcohol
as CARB mission creeps in search of a reason to exist,
in the case of self driving private cars
it's the threat (realized...) to peds, cyclists,
and the cars' passengers.

Those eager for Waymos to solve traffic and parking problems
ignore the fundamental appeals of comfort,
independence, spontaneity, status that comes
with private car ownership.

Must is a nascent Trillionaire
because he knows he must sell
or die.
