Attached is an alternate location that is being proposed by Brian Pate, who is currently running for ANC.

I agree with Tracy.  I don't understand why this is a good option.

Neighbors,

I've attached a proposal I intend to put on the table for consideration at tonight's ANC 6A meeting regarding the CaBi station.  This would slay several birds with one stone--offset the loss of parking resulting from the additional cross walk and provide a better location for the bike share station.  Arguably, it would also have a traffic calming effect.

Hope to see some of you at the meeting tonight.

Best,

Brian Pate

It would be great to get the 13th Street parking back. people don't really use that lane especially at night when there is limited traffic. The parking spaces were only after rush hour anyway, so they can put them back - 6:30pm - 7am?

we only have one car too but it's still tough!  I like the idea of trying to balance the loss by restoring those spaces. good proactive thinking!

Love the idea, just heard some about an unfortunate consequence - the south side crosswalks will consume two, possibly 3 parking spaces on East Capitol (according to the onsite manager’s discussion with our neighbors).  They will take 33 feet of curb to allow room from the crosswalk to parked vehicles.

Maybe we can get the 13th street parking spaces restored to help compensate for their loss? (right across from Park Café)

Otherwise, as we all know, parking will be further limited for all of us. Thank god we only have one car!

Details on New Raised Crosswalks at Lincoln Park
Written by Charles Allen
Friday, 15 October 2010

Tommy tweeted some of this news earlier, but after working with ANC Commissioner Ken Jarboe and DDOT, we have more details to share for improved safety around Lincoln Park on East Capitol Street.

DDOT is planning to install the improved pedestrian crossings next week, which include 4 traffic calming speed tables (as opposed to speed humps), three of which will be function as raised crosswalks.

Here are the details:

On the north side of the park:

• Restore previous crosswalk at Tennessee Avenue, NE (this will not be raised, but will be located just after a raised speed table).

• Add a new raised crosswalk between 12th and 11th Street.

On the south side of the park:

• Add a new raised crosswalk about 15’ east of the intersection of Kentucky Avenue, SE.

• Restore the previous crosswalk at 12th Street, SE with a raised crosswalk.

DDOT also reports that better crosswalk and pedestrian signage will be placed, in addition to striping new bike lanes on both the north and south side of the park.

The contractor reports that the speed tables will be installed next week, and the striping will go in after that.

I've actually never been to an ANC meeting - any clues on how this works, how feedback is gathered?

I don't have an opinion either way but the potential for extra parking is a nice gambit. Of course, two more parking spaces could be created if they put the station on the NE or SE median.

Hi Tracy.

Tonight's meeting is the for the ANCs Transportation Committee. I'm
believe this is for informational purposes and to provide the
community a chance to speak out for or against. There is typically an
opportunity for public comment at these meetings. If and when the
committee votes on a location, that recommendation will be forwarded
to the Full Commission, at which time they will take a formal vote.
The role of ANCs is strictly advisory---they don't actually have the
power to require DDOT to do anything with respect to the station--but
it is definitely a plus to have them on board for whatever one may be
advocating. At least in Ward 6, Councilmembers rarely take a counter
position to that of the ANC.

For a more detailed description of ANCs, you can see the note I posted
to the google group earlier in the week.

Thanks and look forward to meeting you.

Ryan

Depending on the orientation of the bikestation in the street, you would either be docking/undocking into an active turn lane or up onto a sidewalk that has more ped/jogger/stroller traffic than either of the pedestrian refuges. I think either the NE or SE refuge would provide room to undock, make seat adjustments, etc without auto/ped conflict.
