Dear Forwarders:

Big week for station roll outs---yesterday LP, today we get 13th and D NE and 2 by Union Station.  While they are passing them out like halloween candy, are there any others we would like to see installed?  I've asked a couple times for details about Stanton Park, but haven't heard anything.  What say you, CaBi Forward?

Hello Forwarders, as the stations roll out this week, I wanted to let you know that Stanton park is still in the works. My initial location on the SE corner needed to be revisited due to poor site conditions.

but I am looking at an in-street location there as well as some other spots. Do not fear, there will be a Stanton park area station.

I've already floated my ideas about a location for a station near the entrance to Gallaudet over to Chris and Jim at DDOT but here were my suggested locations:

1)     on the grass area at the NW corner of the M St NE and Florida Ave intersection. There is a little bit of topography on this little green space so it would have to be cut back a little to allow the install of the rack.  Not sure where the adjacent property owners land stops and where public space begins.  A counterflow bike lane on M St from Florida back to 4th ST NE would help to tie the station in with the N/S bike routes on 6th and 4th as well as any future EW cycle tracks/lanes on M St.

2)     on the grass area at the NE corner of the intersection of  6th and Florida.  There is a large, relatively flat expanse just in front of the Gallaudet fence that could work.  This would provide relatively easy (still have to get across Florida Ave) access to the N and S bike lanes that go on 6th.  I assume this is just typical DC owned public space.

3)     on the little parkish triangle formed by L St, W. VA Ave, and FL Ave.  Very underutilized little area between the three roads.  Not sure if that space would fall into the NPS ownership category or not.  This location doesn’t really tie in very well with any existing bike infrastructure (that I noticed anyway).

These locations would help to serve Gallaudet's students, the residents in the northern portion of Near Northeast, and residents of Trinidad (location #3 in particular).  Unfortunately all of the potential locations that I saw involved putting the station on grass ILO hardscape.

Would be interested to hear the groups thoughts on a station in this part of the city.  Currently all of the stations on H St. and the one on M St. are a bit too far to be convenient for Gallaudet students.

Might be a little farther away from the park (1 block), but how about at the NE Neighborhood Library along Maryland Ave NE or 7th St NE? I think the sidewalk on Md is a bit wider.

On the opposite side of the park on Mass Ave NE, how about on the sidewalk in front of the pocket park by Schneider's. Lots of restaurant destinations on that block. Not sure if pocket park is NPS.

Maybe you've looked at these.

I agree -- we no longer live on that side of the hill but I always
figured the NE Library would be a perfect location. (really, all
libraries ought to have a bike station) Just my $.02.

First of all, enormous thanks to Chris and his colleagues for their work in getting CaBi up and running and for being so responsive to our suggestions, concerns, and general feedback. Also thanks to my fellow CaBi-Forwarders for their thoughtful recommendations.

I just wanted to echo Liz Pomper's sentiment from a few weeks ago. I also work near McPherson Sq. -- between Franklin Park and Thomas Circle, specifically -- and we're in a bit of a CaBi desert over here. I would LOVE to hop on one of the bikes to run errands mid-day, but more often than not I have to skip it. I don't usually have time to walk the 5 blocks or so to and from any of the nearest stations and still accomplish what I need to. What is the likelihood that we'll see a station somewhere in this 'hood? Is it a question of finding a suitable site, or is this area just not on the list for one of the remaining stations?

Cheers,
Amy
(who would also love to see a station near her home (in the DC General/Congressional Cemetery area), but who suspects that that one is a much longer shot)

Speaking as someone from the other side of the District, but just as interested in seeing CaBi become as user-friendly and convenient as possible, here are some of my thoughts:

1. Additional stations in Georgetown.  In addition to 2-3 other spots on the University campus (I understand that GU and DDOT have had conversations about this), placing stations:
-- at the ends of M Street in Georgetown (28th street near the Four Seasons/Lukoil, and 34th street/near the Key Bridge, maybe in Francis Scott Key Park, although that may be NPS property).
-- 1-2 other stations centrally located in the Wisconsin Avenue shopping strip -- possibly R street, P Street and/or N Street.
-- Montrose Park, Rose Park, and Volta Park would be great stations in encouraging folks not to drive to where they play basketball/tennis or just picnic, though some of these are likely NPS property.

2.  A station or two in Glover Park, and one near Cleveland Park Metro.  (I  think these are both in the works).

3.  Otherwise, I'd be mostly interested in increasing the density in downtown stations.

Hill SE probably has more than its fair share of stations, but what
about one near Frager's Hardware at 11th & Penn. SE? It would be
great to just zip over there when I'm in the middle of a project
rather than drive and circle the block endlessly for parking. In
addition to Frager's itself, there are plenty of other immediate
destinations including CVS, restaurants, Ginkgo Gardens, a dry cleaner
and 2 elementary schools.

As for station locations, I think there are several wide swaths of
sidewalk in that general vicinity but also the Penn. Ave median and
the triangle park.
