Dear CABank,
For years, I have been looking for a good, affordable, fixed-
width Unicode TrueType font for CA transcription. We have been
relying so far on our own fixed-width Unicode font called CAFont, but
this font is only useful for Roman alphabets and it doesn't include
many important symbols which have to be added one by one.
Last night, I finally found what I had been looking for. It is
called Ascender Uni Duo and it can be purchased and downloaded from www.fontmarketplace.com
for $29.95. It includes 56,000 characters, including most all of
Unicode. Make sure you get the one with the added term "Duo", since
straight Ascender Uni is not fixed-width.
We will try to keep adding characters to CAFont as we use more
and more Unicode characters to mark important distinctions in
conversation. However, the advantage of Ascender Uni Duo is that all
those characters are already there, so you will not have to keep
updating your font as we find new symbols to mark new distinctions.
You may find the glyphs of Ascender Uni Duo a bit thin compared
to CAFont. However, I think your eye will adjust to the change pretty
quickly. In fact, there is no problem in using both fonts. CLAN
should now remember the last font you selected by hand and keep with
that until you decide to switch to another one.

Dear CABank users

I wonder if any of you have a problem with the way in which the
webdata movies work withinn System X.5 (Mac). I recently upgraded my
Mac (now an iMac running X.5) and when trying to run in 'continuous
playback' mode using Webdata I can only get the sound - not the video
(I've been trying to run some files in the 'Eng-UK/Forrester/' set of
files). This problem is not a firewall problem at this end
(University of Kent - England) as everything is fine when using my
original mac running 10.4). Also, if I then put the original files in
the library itself (not using WebDATA) then again everything is
hunky-dory. So, it seems to be something specific with me now using
System X.5 .......hmmhmm

Any advice would be most welcome

You are correct in saying that we can rule out a university-
level firewall. However, it is possible that your OSX 10.5 Mac itself
has different settings from your older Mac. One obvious place to look
is the Security System Preference tab called Firewall. Try allowing
all connections. Also, within QuickTime there are several relevant
settings. Unfortunately, since my system has never had exactly this
type of problem, I am not sure which of the various QuickTime settings
to suspect. However, to check these out, you open QuickTime and then
QuickTime Preferences and look at the Streaming and Advanced Tabs.
For Streaming you want either Automatic or else the option closest to
your connection speed. For Advanced, the main issue is the MIME
Settings. Just check to see if these are the same between your old
Mac and the new Mac.
I realize that this last part of checking QuickTime settings may
be a bit of a wild goose chase. Perhaps Leonid has some more cogent
suggestions. But this is all I can think of right away. In any case,
this is definitely nothing inherent in OSX 10.5, since I have been
using that successfully with WebData all over the world for well over
a year.
By the way, you may notice that your files are looking more and
more like "real CA". However, it is possible that, in this
transition, some codes were dropped. If you see anything crucially
missing, please tell me and we can fix it.

Dear Brian and Leonid

Just thought I'd let you know that I solved my problems (below) by
adjusting the streaming preferences as you suggested (the connection
speed to LAN/Intranet). Great, and thanks again.

p.s., I have been doing other things since we last spoke of course!
