Title: Postdoctoral Fellow Positions at the Future Ecologies Group:

Urban ecology / digital design / robotics for architecture / façade technology

 

Research Group Introduction

The Future Ecologies Group at SUSTech School of Design leads the way in researching the intersection of technology and natural systems for a greener future. We are currently seeking outstanding postdoctoral fellows to conduct cutting-edge research on transforming architectural and urban environments through innovative ecological research and design, digital tools, robotics, and new façade technologies.

 

PI Introduction

Christiane M. Herr is Professor and PhD supervisor as well as responsible person for education and Director of the BEng Industrial Design program at the School of Design, Southern University of Science and Technology. With a background in architecture and engineering, Christiane focuses on the areas of cross-disciplinary ecological design, advanced façade technologies and digitally supported design. Christiane obtained a Dipl.-Ing. degree from the University of Kassel, and her MArch and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Hong Kong. Before joining SUSTech, she held positions as Associate Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and Shenzhen University and as Visiting Assistant Professor at National Cheng Kung University. In her recent work, Christiane has focused on structural and material aspects in cross-disciplinary collaborative design processes involving scientists, engineers and designers, with special emphasis on the local context of China. Christiane is Past President of the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA) and vice-chair of the Board of the CAADFutures Foundation. She is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Architectural Computing, the journal Architectural Intelligence and the journal Sustainable Horizons. Herr has authored over 100 peer reviewed academic publications and has co-edited the book “Design Cybernetics: Navigating the New”, published in the Springer Design Research Foundations Series.

 

Project Directions:

·       innovative applications of artificial intelligence and generative design strategies for future ecological environments

·       urban ecology of new green building types

·       drone-building interfaces

·       control systems for integrated building facades

·       robotic fabrication of bio-receptive building elements

·       façade technology integrating natural and artificial elements for sustainable future urban environments

Position Description:

-        Conduct technical development and experimentation related to the postdoctoral topic and publish high-level papers in relevant fields.

-        Participate in the application for research grants related to the project.

-        Undertake a certain amount of graduate student supervision and management tasks.

 

Qualifications:

-        Ideal candidates possess a recent Ph.D. in Architecture, Urban Ecology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a closely related field.

-        Solid technical background, familiar with key software depending on the candidate’s field, and able to learn quickly as needed.

-        Strong research capability, preferably with experience in publishing international high-level publications or participating in research grant applications.

-        Good team player, proactive, excellent organizational and coordination skills, and fluent English communication, reading and writing abilities.

 

Compensation:

-        Salary will be competitive and negotiated according to prior experiences. A salary ranging from 330,000 to 400,000 RMB per year. Outstanding candidates may apply for the President's Excellence Postdoctoral Fellowship with an annual salary of 415000 RMB upon successful application.

-        Official employment, eligibility to apply for Shenzhen residence and benefits including medical insurance, children's education and childcare arrangements, and participation in social insurance and housing provident fund in accordance with policies of Shenzhen.

-        Candidates who graduated from the global top 200 institutions may apply for the "Guangdong Province Overseas Postdoctoral Talent Support Program."

-        Postdoctoral fellows who have yet to use on-campus dormitories or public rental housing in Shenzhen can enjoy an additional housing subsidy of 2800 RMB/month before tax (subject to the latest standards of South University of Science and Technology).

-        Provide an excellent working environment and opportunities for domestic and international cooperation and exchange. The postdoctoral fellows enjoy academic communication funding support with 25000 RMB for two years (subject to the latest standards of South University of Science and Technology).

-        For postdoctoral fellows who meet the requirements of the latest policies on housing and living allowances for newly introduced talents in Shenzhen, after settling in Shenzhen, they can apply for a one-time housing and living allowance of 30000 RMB (tax-free, self-apply online).

-        Postdoctoral fellows who choose to work in Shenzhen after leaving the station and sign an employment contract with local enterprises or institutions for more than 3 years, can apply for Shenzhen Postdoctoral Research Funding. The Shenzhen government provides an annual scientific research subsidy of 100000 RMB per person for 3 years (subject to the latest application requirements of Shenzhen).
