A truly green exit after a bank heist
By Sam Wood

Inquirer Staff Writer

Kenneth Pagan may be a bank robber and considered "armed and
dangerous" by the FBI, but he cares about the environment.
As proof, the FBI yesterday released surveillance photos showing Pagan
holding up a bank in Kensington on Thursday morning - and then making
his getaway on a mountain bike.

By the way, the FBI says it was the second time this month that Pagan
has robbed the Beneficial Bank branch at 826 E. Allegheny Ave. Pagan,
38, is charged with robbing the same bank on Nov. 4, said J.J. Klaver,
spokesman for the FBI.

In Thursday's heist, Pagan handed a threatening note to a teller, and
made off with an undetermined amount of cash, according to the FBI.
Outside surveillance photos show him climbing onto the bike and riding
off.

Authorities said the 38-year-old Pagan was described as Hispanic, 5-
foot-7, and weighing about 175 pounds. He is known to frequent the
Kensington neighborhood.

The FBI said Pagan is considered armed and dangerous, and a reward is
being offered for information leading to his apprehension. Tipsters
may remain anonymous. Anyone with information is being asked to call
the FBI at 215-418-4000.

=v= I follow bicycling news headlines every day, and it seems
to me that BMX bikes were the preferred human-powered getaway
vehicle, with department store BSOs making a strong showing
(the latter could be confused with MTBs, of course).
<_Jym_>

ObDisclaimer: Nobody's perfect. I myself could probably be
persuaded to rob banks on a BMX bike if Nicole Kidman was
involved in some way.

Sorry Mikey, a "typical" mountain biker did not
rob a bank. A bank robber escaped from the scene
on a mountain bike. You can't have it any other
way. It is egregious to reverse the connection.

It is NOT TRUE that mountain bikers rob banks as
a typical activity.

That's not what I said. I said that HE is a typical mountain biker,
since they are all involved in breaking the law. Learn to read. And to
obey the law.

The other day one was walking his mountain bike on a trail closed to
bikes. He said that he had talked to a ranger, and the ranger told him
it was okay to walk the bike: TWO blatant lies. (1) The rangers are
never around, and (2) they all know that the PRESENCE of a bike is
illegal. That's what the universal sign (a bike with a red bar
sinister across it) means: NO BIKES. That is SO very typical. Mountain
bikers, in my experience, are all liars. ALL of them. You, too.

>Mikey, you asshole. You don't know me from Adam.
I responded to your subject line, wherein YOU
characterized Typical Mountain Bikers as Bank
Robbers, or You typified mountain biker activity
as robbing banks. Take your pick.

Learn to read! He is a typical mountain biker because he's engaged
in BREAKING THE LAW. DUH!

>The story you tell above (about the guy walking
his bike) has so many holes in it it should be
Swiss cheese.

>Lie (1). "The rangers are never around."
Says who? You mean the rangers don't do their
job? Perhaps the biker actually went looking
for a ranger to ask permission to move his bike
from one location to another.

Since the rangers are never around, that is impossible. He simply
LIED, as all mountain bikers I have ever known do.

>Lie (2). "they all know that the PRESENCE..."
Yeah, so what. This does not preclude the
possibility that one of them actually did give
your WALKER permission to move his bike from
one location to another.

The rangers aren't that stupid. Their job is to know & enforce the
law. The law doesn't allow the PRESENCE of a bike on those trails.
Since you know NOTHING of the situation, you are better off saying
nothing, rather than putting your foot in your mouth again. But
mountain bikers don't have any impulse control, so I expect you to
make the same mistake again. And again. And again....

Since you are a bit of a math and statistics whiz, why don't you go
ahead and show us proof that ALL mountain bikers are "involved in
breaking the law."

And don't waste anyone's time with more of your preposterous
observations and your extremely limited myopic "experience." Your
observation skills have already been proved biased and unreliable.

The fact that you claim all mountain bikers are involved in breaking
the law, well, that makes you a liar too.

Keep it up, Mike.
You have once again shown yourself to be
the biggest bigot and misanthrope usenet
has ever seen. Again, you don't know me,
you don't know people who ride bicycles
(or anything else for that matter). You
see the world ONLY through your own
peculiar set of lenses. You fail to see
that humans are part of the environment
like it or not. I also understand that
you ride a mountain bike from time to time.
Is that so? Or maybe you do all your
traveling by gas-guzzler. Is that your
better alternative? If so we can add
hypocrite to the appellations I've added
to your name above.

As for knowing nothing of the situation,
you're right I don't. However, I am loath
to accept ONLY your side of any description
of any situation knowing your one-sided
view of all situations.

It's obvious to anyone who knows mountain bikers, as I do. I have yet
to meet even ONE mountain biker who obeys the law. I saw two mountain
bikers today. One was riding over the 15 MPH speed limit. The other
one was riding with his dog, and let the dog shit in the park and
didn't pick up after it. QED See how easy it is?

BS. See http://home.pacbell.net/mjvande/scb4. Yes, humans are part of
the environment: by far the most DESTRUCTIVE part!

I also understand that

No, only once in my life.

Or maybe you do all your

No. Bicycle & public transit.

You obviously know NOTHING about me, or much of anything else.

All I see is how easy it is for you to perpetuate a lie you told.
That's two people. Do you understand the difference between TWO and
ALL, or are you pretending to be stupid?

Furthermore, can't you read? You gave me more silly observations. I
want proof. Show me that your preposterous sample represents the
population. Didn't you study statistics? Did you learn about sample
bias? Didn't you learn about absence of evidence and evidence of
absence?

You can't prove your statement. And you are a liar.

I can also truthfully make the statement that I have yet to meet ONE
Mike Vandeman in person who obeys the law. All that says is that we
have never met.

Yet, I am not so dumb that I would conclude that ALL Mike Vandemans
are "involved in breaking the law." That would be a lie.

Now, care to try again, or are you ready to admit you lied?
