Where/how did you get a breakdown of the fees? I bought a new car last
year, and the registration card says I paid $341 in registration fees,
but there's no breakdown. I was thinking of putting the entire amount
on line 7 (Other taxes) of Schedule A to form 1040..

OOps, sorry I hadn't read all the articles in this thread, some of which
said that I could call the DMV and find out. Some others said that
the DMV couldn't furnish such information. So if anybody knows what the
fixed non-deductible components are, could you please post/mail them to
me, so that I can calculate my deductible component.

I got the breakdown of fees because I asked to have a copy when I
registered the car.

DMV will probably not give you the information you want. For your
case, do what I said in my earlier post. Here's how to come up with
the CURR VLF amount to deduct on your taxes:

Total Registration Fee: $341.00

Subtract the following:

CURR RF 27.00 These amounts are
CURR CHP 1.00 standard fees charged
CURR SAFE 1.00 to everyone that
CURR ABN VEH 1.00 registers their car.
CURR AIR QLT 2.00
RLP FEE 1.00
_______

Total CURR VLF to deduct $308.00

This looks like a reasonable amount to deduct given that the
car is pretty new.

Since you bought the new car in CA, it has CA emissions and you don't
deduct the amounts listed below which are one time fees for cars
without California emissions.

N/R SMOG 300.00
N/R ORIG SF 10.00

Hope this helps. Mark

I don't know if it differs from area to area, but the for the last couple
of years, my DMV statement has stated how much of the registration fee
is deductable (as a "personal property tax"). The state income tax booklet
also says how much is deductable; note that it varies from county to county.
