The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it,
   the world, and those who live in it;
for he has founded it on the seas,
   and established it on the rivers.
- Psalm 24:1-2

Happy Earth Day from the ELCA Washington Office!
Below are a few advocacy and educational opportunities
to care for God's creation in the coming weeks.

Lutherans Restoring Creation is partnering with Green Faith to enroll ELCA congregations in GreenFaith’s Certification Program. This unique program helps houses of worship become environmental leaders in their communities, reduce their operating expenses, and attract and engage new members.   GreenFaith provides extensive support for participating churches and LRC has worked with GreenFaith to tailor the program for ELCA congregations.  To launch the collaboration, GreenFaith is underwriting a percentage of the tuition of 20 ELCA congregations nationwide.

GreenFaith will offer free webinars this spring to help ELCA leaders learn more.  Visit https://www.z2systems.com/np/clients/greenfaith/news.jsp?news=28 to register for the webinars.

The 2012 National Council of Churches Earth Day Sunday resource focuses on the “ethics of energy,” providing a Christian perspective on energy that acknowledges the abundance of God’s Creation and our call to care for Creation.  The Earth Day resource is part of the NCC Eco-Justice Programs’ year-long focus on energy issues that includes resources, webinars and stories of congregations around the country responding to the energy challenges we face.

Lutherans to discuss ecology online on May 12!  The Lutheran World Federation is promoting a wider conversation on ecological justice. You are invited to participate in this first virtual conference.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, who in your self-emptying love gathered up and reconciled all creation to the Father.  Innumerable galaxies of the heavens worship you.  Creatures that grace the earth rejoice in you.  All those in the deepest seas bow to you in adoration.  As with them we give you praise, grant that we may cherish the earth, our home, and live in harmony with this good creation, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.
