Perspectives in AI seminar of the C4AI will host
Dr. Álvaro Soto Arriaza, (Associate Professor, Computer Science at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Head of Cenia and Co-Founder Zippedi Inc) on October 16th, 16h – 17h30 Brasilia time (3pm – 4:30pm EST), to talk about "CENIA - The Chilean National Center for AI".Open/free/online event - Seminar in English - Online at Youtube channel of @C4AIUSP
Abstract:
This talk briefly introduces CENIA, the Chilean National Center for AI. Established in 2021, CENIA aims to be a key pillar for the harmonious development of AI in Chile and Latin America. Specifically, this presentation focuses on two key initiatives at CENIA. First, it presents the Latin American AI Index, a public study that provides a detailed and comprehensive overview of the current state of AI in the region. Second, it briefly describes ongoing efforts to develop the first Large Language Model focused on Latin American, a collaborative project across the region that aims to actively contribute to the AI revolution, highlighting the unique talents, cultures, and perspectives of the region. Finally, the talk showcases examples of CENIA’s technology transfer activities, illustrating how the center is translating research into impactful real-world applications.
Bio:
Prof. Dr. Álvaro Soto Arriaza is a civil engineer from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, a master of science from Louisiana State University, and a doctor of Philosophy and PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. His areas of expertise focus on machine learning, cognitive robotics, visual recognition, and big data. He is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at UC and co-founder of the startup Zippedi, a Chilean robot that uses artificial intelligence applied to supermarkets and retail. He currently heads the National Center for Artificial Intelligence.
